Why Join Us? The Library Technician, under the direction of the Supervisor of Production and Library Services, initiates and facilitates the workflow and the production of alternate format materials for learners served by APSEA. The technician is also responsible for obtaining, circulating, cataloguing, making accessible, and storing a collection of educational materials and resources. The technician liaises with a wide variety of clients including APSEA interprovincial teams, learners, and partner agencies.

Day-to-day, The Library Technician

  • Shelves, shelf-reads, weeds, and relocates library materials and learner supplies; monitors and maintains appropriate stock levels.
  • Processes loans, returns, renewals, holds, and recalls for print and non-print materials using an integrated library system (ILS); issues overdue notices and maintains accurate inventory records.
  • Coordinates interlibrary loans and the borrowing/lending of materials with departments of education and CAER (Canadian Accessible Educational Resources) agencies.
  • Supports the processing of alternate format requests by validating documentation, identifying appropriate format options, and coordinating production with internal teams and external suppliers.
  • Manages digital assets received from publishers and partner libraries, and obtains copyright permissions in compliance with Section 32.1 of the Canadian Copyright Act.
  • Assists staff and users in navigating the library database and provides clear explanations of library procedures and available services.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding item availability, holds, and loan status; conducts library tours and demonstrates equipment as needed.
  • Catalogues library materials through original and copy cataloguing, following Resource Description and Access (RDA) standards, the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and Library of Congress Subject Headings. Uses tools such as OCLC Z39.50 Cataloguing Service, Voilà (Library and Archives Canada), and other online databases.

What You Bring To The Table

  • Diploma in Library and Information Technology is required; an undergraduate degree is considered an asset.
  • One (1) year experience working in a library setting is an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism with regards to access and distribution of learner information.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver items of up to 35 pounds daily, unassisted. Involves extended periods of standing, packaging materials for shipment, unpacking deliveries and library returns.
  • Proficient in conducting manual and online bibliographic searches.
  • Exceptional attention to detail with proven ability to proofread accurately. Attention to a computer screen will be a daily expectation.
  • Keeps current on new technology, online tools and library industry issues of concern or interest to APSEA.
  • Knowledge of MARC cataloguing, Library of Congress Authorities and Subject Headings, the Dewey Decimal Classification System, and Resource Description and Access (RDA).
  • Strong written and oral communication skills with a sound knowledge of business English, punctuation, and spelling.
  • Ability to manage repetitive work efficiently while working under strict timelines.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills to foster transparent communication and professional relationships with APSEA teams.
  • Willingness to take UEB (Unified English Braille) courses is an asset.
  • French Language skills an asset.
