Field Agronomy Research Technician We’ve got an exciting opportunity for someone to provide key operational and technical support to our Field Agronomists as they carry out crop protection research trials!
At Bayer, we’re all about flexibility, so this position offers a hybrid working environment. It’s a 12-month term role based out of our Rosthern, SK site.
What You’ll Do:
- Jump in to support our field research programs both on-farm (Rosthern) and off-farm.
- Take charge of field tasks like planning sites, setting up plots, applying treatments, collecting data, and harvesting trials to keep things on track with research protocols and timelines.
- Help design trials and make sure all data collection and studies are wrapped up on time.
- Get the research plot materials ready, including seeds, chemicals, and fertilizers.
- Keep an eye on and manage site trials, including maintenance applications, seeding, and irrigation.
Be the Go-To for Field Safety:
- Get to know Canadian HSE policies and procedures that relate to Field Solutions (FS) site operations. Work with the local Field Agronomy (FA) Hub team to create solid delivery plans for the region.
- Lead training sessions, clarify safety behaviors, and collect related safety data.
- Make sure all safety documentation is complete and up-to-date.
Site and Facility Maintenance Coordination:
- Team up with the local Field Solutions and Environmental Affairs team to understand expectations and develop plans for effective site maintenance.
- Oversee seasonal maintenance and winterization of the site, including buildings and machinery (like irrigation).
- Help keep farm facilities and equipment clean and organized.
- Coordinate fleet vehicle needs to meet all regulations.
Equipment Maintenance and Inventory Management:
- Create and manage equipment maintenance schedules.
- Coordinate both internal and external maintenance activities for equipment.
- Join in on CAPEX planning discussions to improve safety and efficiency for all capital equipment.
- Keep an accurate inventory of seeds, chemicals, PPE, and supplies needed for farm and research programs.
Who You Are:
- You’ve got an undergraduate degree or diploma in agricultural science or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- You know a thing or two about agricultural crop production in Western Canada and are eager to dive into crop protection research.
- You’re comfortable operating small-plot and farm equipment.
- You pay strong attention to detail and take safety seriously.
- You’re ready to roll up your sleeves for manual labor, including lifting and equipment maintenance.
- You have a knack for mechanical tasks and can handle them well.
- A valid driver’s license is a must, and you’re willing to get a heavy trailering license.
- Your English communication skills (both written and verbal) are solid.
- You can prioritize your work with minimal supervision.
- You’ve got great organizational, time management, and planning skills.
Preferred Experience:
- You’ve got experience in designing, collecting data, managing, and conducting field research trials focused on crop protection.
- Familiarity with various electronic crop research data capture and analysis tools (ARM experience is a bonus) or a proven ability to learn these tools.
- Experience supervising summer students is a plus!
Preferred Education:
- An undergraduate degree or diploma in agricultural science, or even a Master’s degree, would be great!
