Opportunity
MacEwan University is seeking a Gallery Technician for a casual opportunity with the Mitchell Art Gallery.
The Gallery Technician assists in installation of exhibitions at the Mitchell Art Gallery; prepares gallery spaces; and provides technical support in handling, packing, installing, lighting artworks, and installing didactic materials and signage. You will be accountable for supporting the safe and professional presentation of exhibitions and ensuring that gallery spaces are properly prepared. Additionally, you will provide assistance with the care and administration of the MacEwan Art Collection, including artwork handling, condition reporting, inventory and data entry.
Key responsibilities include:
- Receiving and unpacking art work utilizing proper handling techniques;
- Operating art gallery equipment to transport art work;
- Delivering and installing permanent collections works in spaces throughout the campus;
- Assisting with the identification of flaws and damages on art work for condition reports and ensuring receipts and permission slips are signed by owners; and
- Assisting students and visiting artists as needed.
SKILLS
You will have:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office;
- Knowledge of working with tools;
- Experience in the safe operation of hand powered tools;
- Knowledge of AV equipment;
- The ability to lift heavy objects (50 lbs);
- Experience working as an art handler;
- Strong team player qualities with the ability to work collaboratively and independently;
- Organizational skills with the ability to execute details precisely under pressure; and
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A minimum of a 2-year post-secondary education in related field.
- Certificates or coursework in: Art handling and conservation, Health and safety (e.g. WHMIS, ladder safety, manual handling), Museum standards and practices.
- A minimum of 2 years of experience with exhibition installation at a museum, gallery or cultural institution.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
- Evening and weekend work may be required.
