The Opportunity:
The Data Integration Specialist II is responsible for supporting the City’s ERP transformation by enabling the migration of data from legacy systems to modern platforms. As part of the ERP Project Team, this role focuses on master data management and entity resolution to ensure clean, accurate, and unified data across systems. Using Microsoft Fabric, the Data Integration Specialist II builds scalable data pipelines and lakehouse architectures aligned with the medallion architecture, refining data through Bronze (raw), Silver (cleaned), and Gold (business-ready) layers. The role includes ingesting data, applying transformation and resolution logic, and reintegrating high-quality data back into source and target systems. This position helps establish a trusted, high-performance data foundation to support enterprise analytics and strategic decision-making.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Design and implement scalable data architectures across on-premises SQL Server and Microsoft Fabric environments, ensuring alignment with enterprise standards and future-state strategies.
- Lead the development and maintenance of comprehensive documentation, such as data flow diagrams, entity relationship diagrams (ERDs), data dictionaries, and system architecture blueprints.
- Establish and enforce data standards and best practices, such as naming conventions, version control, deployment procedures, and data modeling guidelines.
- Architect and optimize data pipelines and lakehouse solutions using Microsoft Fabric components (e.g., Dataflows, Data Factory, Spark), enabling efficient ingestion, transformation, and modeling of structured and unstructured data.
- Oversee master data management (MDM) and entity resolution initiatives, defining governance frameworks, validation rules, and integration strategies to ensure consistency and integrity of core datasets.
- Collaborate with business stakeholders and data stewards to design semantic models and dimensional structures that support enterprise reporting and analytics.
- Provide guidance and support to junior team members providing guidance on technical design, documentation standards, and troubleshooting methodologies.
- Conduct architecture and solution reviews, ensuring data engineering solutions are well-documented, maintainable, and aligned with organizational goals.
- Monitor and enhance performance of data workloads, proactively identifying bottlenecks and implementing improvements to ensure reliability and scalability.
- Automate and optimize data engineering workflows, including deployment pipelines, monitoring frameworks, and data quality validation.
- Ensure compliance with IT change management, data protection, and disaster recovery policies, maintain detailed records and audit-ready documentation.
- Contribute to strategic planning and roadmap development for data services, evaluating emerging technologies and recommending improvements to the City's data ecosystem.
You Bring:
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Data Management, or a closely related discipline is required; a master’s degree in a related field is considered an asset.
- Required Certifications:
o Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Engineer Associate
o Microsoft Certified: Fabric Data Engineer Associate
- Certifications that are considered assets:
o ITIL Foundation (v4)
o Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Fundamentals
o Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate
o Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP)
o Microsoft Certified: Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals
o Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect Expert
- Cloud Platform Expertise
o Hands-on experience with Azure data services (Synapse, Data Lake, Azure SQL) and Microsoft Fabric
o Skilled in real-time analytics (KQL/Eventstreams), Notebooks, and API integration
o Strong understanding of data quality, metadata management (Azure Purview), and CI/CD practices
- Core Data Engineering & Pipeline Design
o 3+ years designing pipelines with Microsoft Fabric (Dataflows, Lakehouses, Spark, Data Factory)
o Proficient in Python for entity resolution and MDM using tools like Zingg
o Experienced in semantic modeling, ERDs, and Power BI enhancements (DAX, Power Query)
- Foundational Database & Infrastructure Experience
o 8+ years supporting enterprise data platforms; 5+ years in senior SQL Server roles
o Expertise in SSIS, SSRS, T-SQL, performance tuning, and hybrid architecture
o Skilled in security, access control, diagnostics, and automated maintenance
- Additional Skills & Assets
o Supported ERP data initiatives, including legacy-to-modern platform migrations
o Familiar with spatial data tools (e.g., ArcGIS) and databases like PostgreSQL, MySQL, Oracle, Firebird
o Experienced in platform upgrades, patching, and capacity planning within enterprise IT environments
o Proactive and innovative, with a strong focus on emerging technologies and strategic alignment
o Resilient leader with a collaborative mindset and ability to drive results under pressure
o Detail-oriented, ensuring data integrity, documentation quality, and operational consistency
