Description:

Edmonton Catholic Schools is accepting applications for Casual Educational Assistant (Medical) positions for day-to-day assignments in various schools /sites throughout the district. The primary focus of the job will be to provide a range of personal care and medical assistance throughout the day to students with specific severe and multiple physical disabilities. Because of the student’s specific needs, each requires constant observation, supervision, and physical support. The work is physically and mentally demanding and typically focused on one student at a time.

Candidates with medical skills and a health care aide certificate will be prioritized.

This is a casual position with no guarantee of hours. However, all casual hires are eligible to apply to internal temporary and permanent positions.

Job Responsibilities:

Assist teacher and multi-disciplinary teams in implementing programs to meet individual students special and diverse needs;
Provide ongoing personal and physical care and medical assistance;
Administer medications and assist with G-tube feeding;
Ensure students have the necessary materials to complete classwork and activities.
Assist students in adapting to the classroom, developing social skills, self-esteem, independence, and interacting with others;
Instruct students on the work to be completed and provide assistance in completing classroom work and activities.
Monitor students throughout the day to ensure safety, anticipate needs and intervene to curtail inappropriate or unsafe behaviours or actions.

Qualifications:

Post-secondary diploma in a related discipline (i.e. early childhood development, child and youth care, special needs, health care aide) plus a minimum of three years of directly related experience.
Knowledge of Anger and Behaviour Management, Crisis Intervention, De-escalation, and Safe Restraint;
Certification in First Aid and CPR, and knowledge of medication administration;
Knowledge of medical conditions, developmental delays, disorders, and disabilities that pertain to students with a range of disabilities;
Knowledge of various apparatus used for personal and physical care, including lifting, transferring, and body positioning techniques;
Strong team skills and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to meet the educational, physical, emotional, and behavioural needs of the student;
Ability to work closely with students and apply alternative strategies to manage behaviours and/or disabilities;
Ability to travel to sites within Edmonton.
