Recreation and Culture Department

Overview
The City of Chilliwack Recreation and Culture Department requires an Ice Person III (Casual) to assist in the performance of ice maintenance, general facility maintenance and janitorial tasks. The successful candidates will also be operating a variety of machinery and equipment such as ice conditioning machines, ice edger’s, power tools, maintaining, under instruction and supervision, the ice surface in proper condition; under general supervision of the Arenas Supervisor II or Arenas Supervisor III assume responsibility for the Refrigeration Plant and related equipment. The incumbent in this class will have supervisory responsibilities in absence of a supervisor on shift, such as training and orientating Caretakers, Cashiers, Skate Patrollers and new Ice Persons. In the absence of a supervisor, this position is responsible in ensuring shift duties are completed thoroughly and safely by all staff on shift. As assigned, the incumbent may have responsibilities for staff scheduling coverage.

Are you the one we’re looking for?
In order for you to succeed in this role, you will need to have the following requirements and skills:

  • Must have a minimum of Grade 12 education; or equivalency;

  • Must hold a valid Refrigeration Operator Certificate, or be a Power Engineer (Fourth Class or higher) as defined in the BC Safety Standards Act-Power Engineers, Boiler, Pressure Vessel and Refrigeration Safety Regulation;

  • Must have 3 years of experience, and a good knowledge of material, methods, procedures and equipment used in the preparation of Arena ice surfaces;

  • Must have completed a Building Services Worker course or the equivalent training and experience;

  • Must have experience in janitorial work and a good knowledge of material, methods, procedures and equipment used in janitorial work;

  • Must be in possession of a valid B.C. Driver's Licence;

  • Able to operate a variety of equipment, and perform minor repairs;

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs;

  • Able to exhibit courtesy, tact and diplomacy in dealing with the public and be neat and presentable in appearance;

  • Able to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with co-workers, users and other members of the public;

  • Able to understand verbal and written instructions in English and complete required forms, logs and reports.

The incumbent, upon hiring, will have union dues deducted from source in accordance with the Union Agreement. The rate of pay for this position is $38.18 (2025 rate) for Level III.
