About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented Surface Finishing Technician (Powder Coating) to join our manufacturing team at Longboard Architectural Products.
This role is responsible for supporting the aluminum surface preparation and chemical pre-treatment processes used in our powder coating lines. The Surface Finishing Technician ensures that chemical baths, process parameters, and quality standards are maintained to achieve optimal coating adhesion and product durability.
Working closely with the production and quality teams, you will monitor chemical processes, conduct laboratory testing, and support continuous improvement initiatives that ensure our coatings meet Longboard’s high quality standards while complying with environmental and safety regulations.
What You Will Do
- Process Ownership & Quality Control

- Perform pre-treatment analysis and process operations to maintain stable coating preparation processes.
- Conduct chemical titration and routine analysis for powder coating pre-treatment baths.
- Monitor key process parameters including pH, conductivity, and chemical concentration, making adjustments as required.
- Prepare samples and conduct etching rate testing according to internal specifications.
- Conduct routine inspections of tanks, pumps, filtration systems, spray nozzles, and process equipment.
- Coordinate maintenance requests when abnormalities are identified.
- Dump, clean, refill, and recharge tanks with fresh chemical solutions when required.
- Verify automated paint line start-up checks including DI systems, wastewater treatment systems, and chemical dosing pumps.
- Review process data and identify trends that may impact coating performance.
- Conduct mechanical and chemical quality tests on daily production samples.
- Perform additional tests including Machu testing, muriatic acid resistance testing, and nitric acid resistance testing when required.
- Prepare samples and documentation for external laboratories and suppliers.
- Support laboratory trials for new chemicals and process improvement initiatives.
- Documentation & Reporting

- Maintain accurate records of pre-treatment tests and process results.
- Monitor chemical consumption and assist in optimizing usage.
- Track chemical inventory and ensure accurate documentation of chemical storage and usage.
- Safety, Organization & Environmental Compliance

- Handle chemicals safely following WHMIS guidelines and hazardous material protocols.
- Ensure proper PPE use and compliance with safety procedures.
- Safely operate and maintain laboratory testing equipment.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the surface treatment area, wastewater treatment system, and QC laboratory.
- Perform cleaning and preventative maintenance during scheduled downtime.
- Maintain accurate SDS documentation and chemical labeling.
- Process Support & Technical Assistance

Assist the Quality team with powder coating sample testing and product evaluations.

Conduct analysis on products with quality concerns.

Support wastewater treatment operations, including chemical adjustments to maintain regulatory compliance.

Monitor process water parameters used across production departments.

About You
You are someone who puts people first and strives for operational excellence. You enjoy working in technical environments and are passionate about maintaining quality and process stability in manufacturing operations.

Diploma or certificate in Chemical Technology, Chemical Engineering Technology, Materials Science, Surface Finishing, or a related technical field.

1+ years of experience in metal finishing, powder coating pre-treatment, surface treatment, or chemical process operations in a manufacturing environment.

Experience performing chemical titration, bath analysis, pH testing, conductivity testing, and concentration analysis.

Familiarity with laboratory equipment, sample preparation, and testing procedures.

Knowledge of chemical safety procedures and hazardous material handling.

Experience working within ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 environments is an asset.

Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
