Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The Pickleball Host is responsible for creating a welcoming, inclusive, and engaging environment during recreational pickleball sessions at The Salvation Army. This role includes coordinating game flow, supporting participants of all skill levels, and promoting The Salvation Army’s mission and values. The Pickleball Host also acts as an ambassador for the organization, by engaging participants and raising awareness of available programs and opportunities to support The Salvation Army’s work in the community.

Accountabilities:

  • Welcome participants warmly and foster a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment.
  • Set up and take down pickleball equipment before and after each session.
  • Be able to teach basic Pickleball skills and provide guidance or instruction to new players.
  • Monitor games to ensure fair play and positive interactions; participate when an extra player is needed.
  • Facilitate game rotations and engage with participants throughout the session.
  • Serve as the on-site host and marshal for the “Smash to Serve Annual Pickleball Tournament”, ensuring smooth day-of operations and a welcoming experience for all participants.
  • Collaborate with the Administration team and provide reception support when needed, especially in situations involving challenging patrons or general inquiries.
  • Inspect equipment regularly for damage or wear and report any issues to the Program Manager.
  • Promote The Salvation Army’s mission, vision, and core values through respectful conduct and community engagement.
  • Share information about Salvation Army programs and encourage participants to support or get involved through volunteering, donations, or referrals.
  • Report incidents, concerns, or equipment needs to the Program Manager.
  • Support the overall wellness and social inclusion goals of the Pickleball program.
  • Participate in program evaluations and provide feedback for continuous improvement.

Health & Safety:

  • Ensure the play area is safe, clean, and free of hazards before, during, and after each session.
  • Set up and take down equipment safely, following proper lifting and handling procedures.
  • Monitor games to prevent unsafe play and address concerns promptly.
  • Be prepared to respond to minor injuries (first aid/incident reporting) and escalate emergencies as needed.
  • Enforce facility rules to promote a respectful and safe environment for all participants.
  • Report on any safety concerns, incidents, or equipment issues to the Program Manager immediately.
  • Promote health, wellness, and safe physical activity for participants of all ages and abilities.

Working Conditions:

  • This is a regular, part-time position at 10 hours per week.
  • Evening shifts on Tuesdays and Thursdays and may be weekends
  • Indoor gym/recreation setting.
  • Standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 30 lbs required.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications:

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • High school completion is a minimum requirement for this role
  • Certification in First Aid + CPR.

Experience and Knowledge Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 months of customer service experience.
  • Proven experience of playing the game/performing an activity.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Friendly, approachable, and respectful demeanor.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience playing pickleball and an understanding of the rules.
  • Ability to engage with individuals of various ages, cultures, and skill levels.
  • Organized, reliable, and capable of leading informal recreation sessions.
  • Basic conflict resolution skills and problem-solving skills.
  • Supportive of The Salvation Army’s mission, values, and Christian principles.
  • Completion of a Vulnerable Sector Police Check.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $16.50 to $20.62 with a maximum of $24.74.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
