Job Description:
POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:
The Assistant, Childcare provides oversight for children aged 3 and under on Sunday mornings while the parents are participating in the worship service
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Consistently demonstrates empathy and care for children/families
- Contribute to the spiritual development of children through a nurturing environment and a well-rounded program with approved curriculum.
- Provide direction to nursery volunteers.
- Responsible for the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the Nursery Area.
- Routinely sanitize toys, inspect and dispose of hazardous items.
- Responsible for communicating with parents and accountable for signing the children in and out.
- Responsible for creating a welcoming environment for all children and parents.
- Assist with effective risk management; monitoring food safety, medication storage/disbursement, allergies, facility cleanliness/maintenance; provides emergency first aid and assists Integrated Ministries Supervisor in completing, reports and files incident reports as required.
Perform other related duties as required.
MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Youth Ministries & Outreach Coordinator or designate.
- Direct reports for this position: N/A
- May show others how to perform certain procedures
FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:
- May be authorized to handle small amounts of cash.
- Minor responsibilities for equipment, toys, etc.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a temporary part time position based on 3 hours per week.
- Supporting and guiding children's behaviour and emotions.
- The performance of the job requires frequently lifting/moving equipment and children, room set-up, moderate amount of teaching, leading etc.
- Occasional computer work
- Possibility of intervening in physical confrontations
- Cleaning the facility and putting up wall displays.
- The incumbent is required to lift up to 30 pounds with no assistance from others.
- Shifts and outside work.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluid, verbal abuse, tantrums and noise.
Normal Work Hours: Work hours are Sunday's from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. On occasion we may ask for additional time that will be communicated in advance.
The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Army’s Mission, Vision and Values, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Completion of high school diploma is required
- Must maintain a current, valid First Aid & CPR Certification.
- ECE Certificate is an asset.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Up to one year of prior experience in childcare is required.
- Prior experience providing childcare for children with neurodiversity is an asset.
Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

- Demonstrates an active interest and attitude suitable for working with large groups of children.
- Ability to put children at ease and create a warm and friendly environment in which a child can develop fully.
- Ability to communicate in kind, peaceful manner, stay calm and patient.
- Ability to work with supervision.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Represent The Salvation Army in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
- Demonstrates ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
- Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
- Self-motivated/disciplined.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
- Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.61 to $22.01 with a maximum of $26.41.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
