Position Type: Full-time Location: Toronto, ON (hybrid)

Employer Description

Eneon is a leading Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) company and one of the fastest growing in the renewable energy and energy management industries. We are a tight-knit team of seasoned professionals who engineer, integrate, and operate premium BESS solutions across North America.

Eneon is an opportunity to hit the ground running with a growing organization, to be a part of its growth, and to help drive the global energy transformation at large. Eneon is also an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We believe diverse teams and diverse perspectives lead to better outcomes and breakthrough thinking, which are differentiators in any business and fundamental to our long-term success.

Position Description

The Control Systems Specialist supports the design, deployment, and ongoing operation of the control systems that power Eneon's Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) fleet. This role sits at the intersection of controls, systems integration, and platform development — providing hands-on, cross-functional support to the panel prep and lab build-out activities, field energization, and PLC/SCADA/OT development. Over time, this role is expected to take ownership of the RTAC platform, with a trajectory toward a hybrid controls/development focus as the platform matures. The Specialist will develop an in-depth understanding of all components of the BESS and how they affect the overall outcomes of the control philosophy, sharing this knowledge with the broader team to ensure consistency and predictable outcomes.

Key responsibilities include

Control System Design & Development

Participate in design of control system architecture, including instrumentation, PLCs, HMIs, networking, power distribution, and protection, according to requirements in control philosophy and narrative documents. Develop code using Codesys and similar structured text-based programming languages Develop code using Python and similar text-based programming languages. Test and verify the correct operation of controls system code utilizing test bench, physical hardware, or field testing. Develop tools required to verify functionality and provide test reports and documentation. Implement and utilize revision control systems. Develop local monitoring and control interfaces. Develop remote monitoring and control architecture; work with IT specialists to implement cloud-based architectures. Develop and maintain clear documentation for control system development, including architecture decisions, code changes, testing outcomes, and standard practices to support consistency, knowledge transfer, and maintainability. Determine feasibility of new features in collaboration with Product teams. Analyze BESS operational data for performance evaluation and remote diagnostics.

Platform & Development

Take progressive ownership of the RTAC platform integration, initially participating in requirements definition and the lab build-out, then assuming primary ownership as the platform stabilizes. Support the Controls development roadmap through participation in daily standups and contributions to the next-generation platform planning and design. Apply coding and modeling skills (Python, structured text, scripting) to automate rollouts, improve tooling, and reduce manual overhead across the fleet.

Implementation Support & Coverage

Develop and maintain PLC application code and Ignition SCADA screens, scripts, and templates for BESS deployments. Proceduralize the rollout of standardized, object-oriented control templates (Sunspec- and ISA-modeled objects: inverters, converters, batteries) across multiple site architectures. Support core code development, SCADA design, and standardization work and step in for Senior Implementation Specialists on FAT/SAT support, code development, and third-party/customer support as needed.

Systems Integration Support & Coverage

Support field commissioning and energization activities, including bringing complex devices online, working through edge cases, and coordinating across customer, field, controls, contractor, and supplier stakeholders. Support cutover events and site-level integration work (e.g., Fortis-style cutovers out of the office). Serve as a technical bridge between teams during energization campaigns. Lead system FAT and commissioning activities in coordination with Senior Systems Integration Specialists.

Lab, Panel Prep & Test Bench

Support in-house panel prep and Golden Image definition process to enable rapid, plug-and-play cabinet delivery to site. Assemble and validate test bench data; execute controls testing on physical hardware ahead of field deployment. Partner with lab build-out (RTAC requirements) and interface with panel prep support as needed.

OT, Admin & Fleet Support

Maintain ITGlue (OT inventory, access control, documentation) — critical for managing the thousands of live devices that make up our production environment. Utilize Jira for tracking development work. Utilize Birdview for project specific work and tracking.

Requirements

Technical diploma or degree from a registered post-secondary institution in Electrical, Software, Controls, or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent experience). 3–5 years of directly related experience in controls, systems integration, and/or platform development for industrial or energy systems. Demonstrable control software experience, specifically with PLC-based (e.g. Codesys) programming languages and structured text. Proficiency in a general-purpose coding language (Python preferred; C, Git, Linux, Azure, and managed switches are strong assets). Ability to work within critical project timelines with minimal supervision. Ability to work in the office to support panel prep, lab, and cutover activities. Possess the ability to adapt and learn new concepts and technologies quickly.

Assets

Working knowledge of: DC systems ranging from 48 to 1500 VDC, OT networking, and industrial protocols (Modbus, TCP/IP). Knowledge of NEC, CEC, UL9540, and NFPA 855 standards. Prior experience working with inverter, converter, rectifier systems. Prior experience working with energy storage devices (electrochemical batteries, flow cells, fuel cells, CAES, etc.). Experience with object-oriented programming and standardized template design (Sunspec, ISA modeling). Prior work maintaining OT inventory / access-control tooling (e.g., ITGlue). Exposure to Jira or a similar ticketing environment. Certification with third party assessment in the field of controls and automation (i.e. International Society of Automation).
