About the Role
Reporting to the Director, Business Operations, the Manager, Occupational Health and Patient Safety (OHPS), is responsible for leading the organization’s health and patient safety programs. The OHPS Manager will play a key role in establishing an organizational health and safety culture aligned with CASA’s core values of community; child-centered and family-inclusive care; collaboration; inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility; and outcomes-based accountability.

The Manager, Occupational Health and Patient Safety, will:

  • Lead and ensure organizational compliance with Alberta’s OHS legislation.

  • Maintain CASA’s Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

  • Ensure all health and safety program elements are maintained and aligned with best practice. This includes but is not limited to fire safety, hazard assessments, incidents and investigations, training, OHS Committee, infection prevention and control, and emergency preparedness.

  • Oversee CASA’s Safety Incident Management System (SIMS), including daily operation and regulatory compliance as it relates to reporting, investigations and implementation of action items.

  • Ensure key safety policies and procedures are reviewed and revised on an annual basis.

  • Respond to and manage escalated concerns and inquiries regarding workplace health and safety, patient safety, and infection prevention and control.

  • Provide leadership to the OHPS team.

  • Establish and maintain strong and trusting working relationships with people at all levels of the organization.

  • Collaborate with the People and Culture department and CASA leadership to ensure timely access to information required for WCB claims.

  • Implement OHPS initiatives as needed.

  • Ensure organizational objectives and CASA’s operational plan are embedded in departmental tasks and initiatives.

  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in health, safety and wellness for the organization.

  • Collaborate with all levels of leadership to implement all health and safety program elements applicable to each program, service and department.

  • Provide subject matter expertise as a business partner to ensure legislative compliance and the development of OHPS performance metrics across the organization.

  • Manage relationships and act as the primary liaison with relevant external inspectors and auditors.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive knowledge of the OHS Act, Regulations and Code Requirements.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong education, instruction and presentation skills. Knowledge of adult learning principles is an asset.

  • Ability to build and maintain trusting working relationships with internal and external partners.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as part of a team.

  • Strong time management skills including the ability to prioritize competing work demands in a fast-paced and collaborative healthcare environment.

  • Excellent attention to detail in all aspects of work.

  • Eager to learn and coachable.

  • Demonstrated systems thinker with a keen interest in continuous improvement, at micro and macro levels.

Qualifications and Experience

  • A post-secondary diploma in occupational health and safety or bachelor’s degree in occupational health, health sciences, nursing or epidemiology is required.

  • A master’s degree in science or public health in environmental and/or occupational health is an asset.

  • Experience in a health care environment (hospital, community-based or equivalent) is required.

  • Experience in mental health treatment setting is a strong asset.

  • Education in patient safety provided by a recognized Canadian organization is an asset.

  • 3-5 years progressive experience in occupational health and/or patient safety.

Conditions of Employment

  • A satisfactory Criminal Records Check. This would be the financial responsibility of the successful candidate.

  • Ability to pass and maintain Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) certification (training provided by CASA) as well as physical ability to perform all interventions.

Working Conditions

  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs on a regular basis.

  • May be required to travel and must hold a Class 5 Driver’s License and have access to a vehicle.

  • Ability to sit for long periods of time.

  • Ability to train in different restraints required by TCI as needed.
