The Ministry of Finance, Client Services and Compliance Branch requires a confident individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills, and knowledge of accounting and auditing principles to fill a permanent position as a Compliance Officer.
The Revenue Division of the Ministry of Finance is Saskatchewan's primary tax collection agency. The Division is responsible for the administration of several tax programs including the Provincial Sales Tax, Liquor Consumption Tax, Vapour Products Tax and Beverage Container Program.
As a member of a professional team of compliance officers, you will use your excellent communication skills to provide tax information to clients for tax acts administered by the Ministry of Finance to ensure compliance with provincial legislation. Through verbal and written channels, you will explain these tax policies and procedures to clients. You will also be responsible for researching tax issues, preparing reports and recommendations for updates to PST information bulletins, the PST Act, PST Regulations and rulings.
You will provide exceptional client service to tax clients and stakeholders by treating them in a fair, consistent, professional and timely manner. You will be responsible for educating taxpayers to ensure conformity with various provincial tax statutes administered through educational contacts (calls, letters, and emails), as well as on-site visits and presentations. You will also review tax client records to determine tax assessments and be required to complete day trips and up to 4 weeks of overnight travel within Saskatchewan away from headquarters.
To succeed in this position, you will be detail oriented, analytical, and an individual that thrives on applying initiative. You will understand business records including accounting and auditing principles in order to determine tax liabilities; you will be able to interpret and apply legislation and possess strong verbal and written communication skills in order to provide explanations, rulings and information to taxpayers.
Applicants must clearly describe in their resume or cover letter how they have gained the required knowledge and abilities outlined below. Selection for interviews will be made on this basis.
You will have knowledge of:
- Generally accepted accounting principles, financial and cost accounting methods, auditing principles, techniques and procedures; and
- Word processing and accounting computer software packages and databases.
The knowledge and abilities required would typically be obtained through the completion of an Accounting Diploma or Business Degree from a recognized post-secondary institution, supplemented with relevant work experience.
Prospective candidates with required education outside of Canada are strongly encouraged to obtain either an ICAS Assessment Report from www.icascanada.ca or a Credential Evaluation and Authentication Report from www.wes.org, including it with your application. This will aid in ensuring that your qualifications are appropriately evaluated and considered in the application process.
