Working under the direction of the Facilities Services Supervisor – Custodial, Custodians will perform cleaning of the buildings, restocking of hygienic supplies, perform building upkeep such as floor refinishing and carpet cleaning, and maintain custodial equipment used to ensure high levels of cleanliness are maintained.

Specific Duties

  • Cleaning floors, stairwells, washrooms, shower rooms, walls, ceilings, windows (inside & outside), furniture, carpets, window and door frames, black & white boards, sinks , pick up and empty garbage cans, etc.
  • Moving furniture required for the cleaning such as desks, chairs, common space furniture, garbage cans, etc.
  • Floor maintenance such as: sweeping, dust mopping, scrubbing, buffing, floor finishing, stripping, ride on floor machine, etc.
  • Disinfection of washrooms, shower rooms, food service areas, first aid rooms, common area furniture, high touch points, etc.
  • Handling and disposal of various recycling such as cardboard, paper, bottles/cans, etc.
  • Laundry services for cleaning clothes, towels, returned uniforms, bedliners, etc.
  • Restock from inventory paper supplies, hand soap, hand sanitizer, feminine products, etc.
  • Clean and perform minor and scheduled maintenance on custodial equipment.
  • Use automatic chemical dispensing systems.
  • Operation of commercial cleaning equipment.
  • Assist with emergency procedures, not limited to, fire alarms and emergency evacuation.
  • Lock all doors, windows.
  • Assist the public and students with directions.
  • Be attentive to prevent loss.
  • Monitor and report malfunctions or required building maintenance including lights, broken taps, water leaks, damaged walls etc.
  • Ensure assigned workorders are carried out according to priority and predetermined procedures as scheduled and approved by Facilities Management.
  • Assist other Facilities personnel as directed by Facilities Management or Designate.
  • You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
  • You will promote a positive work atmosphere and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
  • Other related duties as assigned by Facilities Management or Designate.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Minimum of grade 10 completion

  • 6 months or more Previous institutional or commercial custodial experience.

  • Knowledge of custodial equipment and chemicals used.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to organize workload in an efficient manner.

  • Bonding and a criminal records check may be required.

  • Willingness to become certified to operate scissor/boom lift

  • WHMIS and Violence in the Workplace training as required by Worksafe BC.

  • Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to work within and contribute to a proactive team environment.

  • Physical ability to completed job demands.
