Looking for a new and exciting opportunity? We are looking for a Lead, Climate Change and Resilience to join our team!

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Manager of Climate Adaptation & Resilience, you will be responsible for providing strategic recommendations aimed at achieving the goals outlined in TransformTO, the City of Toronto’s climate action strategy, most importantly, achieving net zero by 2040. You will oversee the quantification and analysis of sustainability performance, develop and implement standards to improve performance, and monitor progress of various sustainability topics including but not limited to: greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, climate resilience, and corporate and environmental sustainability.

Other responsibilities of your role will include:

  • Working closely with the Manager of Climate Adaptation & Resilience to develop, implement, and continuously improve on TTC’s climate action, corporate and environmental sustainability, by providing technical oversight for internal and consultant led work, stakeholder engagement, and training to internal staff
  • Developing methodologies and tools to quantify organizational Scope 1 & 2 greenhouse gas emissions in aligning with industry standards (e.g., GHG Protocol)
  • Recommending GHG emissions reduction measures, and integrate suggestions into engineering designs, construction, and/or operations
  • Designing a GHG emissions monitoring program, to generate streamlined performance reports
  • Supporting the development of TTC’s corporate energy management plan and associated initiates
  • Creating TTC’s strategic approach to climate vulnerability assessments, incorporating a portfolio climate resilience analysis and streamlined tools for site specific assessments
  • Recommending climate adaptation measures for integration into engineering designs, construction, and/or operations
  • Developing a climate change impact reporting system to monitor the effects of climate change events on assets
  • Formulating sustainability goals and accompanying analytical input for the 5-Year Strategy
  • Developing action plans to improve sustainability performance of facilities, fleets, and infrastructure, delineating specific measures to attain the objectives
  • Executing initiatives outlined in the Green Facility, Fleet, and Infrastructure Action Plans
  • Developing a multi-year corporate sustainability reporting strategy aligned with industry standards (e.g., GRESB, GRI)
  • Creating quantification methodologies and tools, based on industry best practices, to assess and benchmark performance of TTC’s assets for key environmental sustainability indicators
  • Serving as an in-house sustainability subject matter expert, offering technical support for the TTC staff
  • Engaging stakeholders to align on risks, challenges, and priorities, and integrating sustainability into engineering design, specifications, and operational standards
  • Preparing presentations and reports for various stakeholders, including Executives, and the Board
  • Liaising with representatives of public agencies and private industry on technical and legislative changes, developments and practices
  • Providing guidance to ISP and various TTC projects team on capital projects in the area of climate resilience and adaptation
  • Participating in the TTC's Customer Service Ambassador Program
  • Treating passengers and/or employees with respect and dignity and ensuring the needs of passengers or employees with disabilities are accommodated and/or addressed (if applicable and within their area of responsibility) in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Code and Related Orders so that they can fully benefit from the TTC as a service-provider and an employer.

What Qualifications Do You Bring?

  • Your educational background will consist of the completion of a university degree in a related discipline (i.e. Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental or Climate Science) or a combination of education, training, and experience deemed to be equivalent.
  • Your application will demonstrate experience in large public agencies or private sector firms to develop and provide scenarios/solutions to climate adaptation, mitigation, policy development/analysis and carbon emission reductions.
  • You will have extensive experience reviewing engineering drawings, specifications, and design packages to identify opportunities for integrating sustainability principles and enhancing climate resilience
  • Your experience with data analysis, the development of metrics, recommendations and implementation of climate change strategies is considered an asset.
  • You will have working knowledge of stakeholder engagement and negotiations to provide leading solutions to climate change policy and understanding of local, national and international best practices.
  • Your application will reveal your strong knowledge of project management principles, concepts and practices and your ability to carry out and coordinate projects both independently and as a team.
  • You will have strong research, analytical, critical thinking skills and the ability to exercise good judgement.
  • In addition, you will have strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to negotiate, influence, resolve conflicts and problem solve.
  • Your ability to lead and carry out programs and projects will be beneficial to you in this role.
  • You will demonstrate strong customer service excellence with a proven ability to establish effective working relationships with all stakeholders, employees, divisions, and outside agencies within a large and complex environment. Your previous experience in complex multi-stakeholder environments will be considered an asset.
  • Furthermore, you will have good organizational and administrative skills, along with the ability to accomplish tasks with limited supervision.
  • Your application will reveal that you are also proficient in the use of computer and software applications, including presentations, databases, spreadsheets, word processing, and any business continuity digital platform. Your previous experience with software analysis tools (i.e. SQL, Python, R, etc.) will also be considered an asset.
  • As a Lead, Climate Change & Resilience, you may be required to work outside of your regular working hours in the event of an emergency and/or to perform certain job functions when required.
