About the role
The Data Analyst is responsible for improving the efficiency and quality of environmental data onboarding, ensuring data accuracy through strong data models and quality controls, and integrating GIS data into analytical workflows. This role supports the transformation of complex environmental datasets into reliable, analysis-ready information for decision-making and reporting. The Data Scientist collaborates with environmental scientists/engineers, hydrologists, and software developers to provide data-driven insights that support the development of commercial software and increase efficiencies in environmental consulting.
Please note this position could be based out of Calgary, Sherwood Park, Saskatoon, or Ottawa.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Processes & Pipeline Efficiency: Design, build, and optimize scalable data onboarding pipelines for environmental datasets (e.g., laboratory results, field data, sensor data). Automate data ingestion, transformation, and validation processes to reduce manual effort and improve throughput. Identify bottlenecks and inefficiencies in existing data workflows and implement process improvements. Develop reusable data processing frameworks and standardized data templates.
- Data Management and Governance: Ensure data integrity, quality, and security by following best practices in environmental data management. Adhere to regulatory requirements and company policies. Perform ongoing data quality assessments, including validation, anomaly detection, and completeness checks. Maintain a deep understanding of database schemas, relational models, and data structures used in environmental applications. Support schema evolution and data model enhancements as new data types and use cases emerge.
- Data Analysis: Collect, clean, and preprocess data from various sources. Perform exploratory and advanced data analysis on environmental datasets to identify trends, anomalies, and insights. Apply statistical and analytical techniques to support site assessment, monitoring, and reporting use cases. Develop reproducible analysis workflows and analytical outputs for internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Collaboration and Consultation: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including environmental scientists/engineers, hydrologists, geologists, and software developers, to understand site-specific needs and provide data-driven solutions to align data pipelines with platform requirements.
- Research and Development: Stay current with advancements in science, data science, and machine learning. Continuously seek innovative approaches to improve data analysis and tool development techniques.
What You Bring
- Diploma or Bachelor’s degree in data science, Statistics, Computer Science, or a related field.
- 2 - 3 years of professional experience in related field.
Other Knowledge And Skills
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, collaboration and communication skills.
- Strong knowledge of programming languages (Python, R, SQL, etc.)
- Experience with geostatistical software; ArcGIS, QGIS
- Experience with machine learning libraries; scikit-learn, TensorFlow
- Familiarity with or willingness to learn cloud solutions; Azure, AWS is a plus and big data solutions; Spark
Working Conditions
- Primarily working in an office environment. Requires sitting for extended periods of time.
- Prolonged exposure to computer keyboards and computer screens.
- Manual dexterity required to use laptop and peripherals.
- Role requires increased and/or flexible work hours when managing multiple time-sensitive or special requests that have specific deadlines.
- Hybrid work environment with required weekly office attendance on certain days
- Some travel to other IntelleKt offices may be required on occasion.
