We are Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC), a non-profit, community-governed organization that serves over 18,000 clients annually. Established in 1978, SWCHC provides a wide range of health care services such as primary health care, health promotion, community development, mental health, and harm reduction. What the Program Entails
Our children and youth programs support caregivers and parents in a range of languages-from nursery school, to playgroups, homework clubs, workshops and more.
What You’ll Do
The Child and Youth Worker will facilitate community-based child and youth programs. The Child and Youth Worker will provide educational services, support and advocacy, and participate in the development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of age and culturally appropriate programs to help meet the needs of children, youth and their families using a capacity building and health promotion framework.

What We’re Looking For
Life and Work Experience

Experience and flexibility working in diverse community-based programs with families facing multiple health risks and barriers.

Strong knowledge of child development and behaviour guidance techniques
Your Education Path
-
High School Diploma and/or post secondary education
-
Experience working directly with child and youth
-
Criminal Reference check for working with vulnerable populations
-
Current CPR level C, First Aid and Food Handlers Certification
Required Language
- Fluency in English is required.
- Ability to speak French an asset

Your Day-to-Day at a Glance
As our Child and Youth Worker your responsibilities are:
- Provide direct service for children ages 6-12 years at an After School Program
- Plan programming that enhances cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development
- Implement, monitor, and evaluate community-based programming
- Provide program statistics to the Child and Youth Community Developer and enter group
information into the relevant database

Provide updates and contact parents, as necessary

Monitor and maintain/purchase adequate supplies and equipment for programming

Ensure all program safety measures are being met

Work closely with and support program staff, volunteers, and student placements

Priority is given to individuals with unique needs, including single parent families, those who are financially insecure, new Canadians, and persons coping with various disabilities. SWCHC welcomes and supports individuals of all gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, and ethnicities.
SWCHC serves a large multicultural area in Ottawa's centre west, including Dalhousie, Hintonburg, Mechanicsville, and West Wellington, with a population of approximately 40,000 persons. Much of the community's population is made up of new immigrants to Canada, who face many struggles which for many include a lack of English language skills.
