We are hiring a Mechanical Designer (Applications) to join our Sales & Marketing team! This role is both customer-facing and design work-oriented. Candidates must be available for national and international travel to customer sites and tradeshows.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in custom product/equipment development, as well as demonstrated knowledge of using SolidWorks for concept, rendering, and product design. They will also have experience working in customer-facing roles, demonstrating strong communication and customer service skills, attention to detail, and the tenacity to solve intricate challenges. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity.

Shift Schedule:
Monday to Friday, 8.5-hour Day Shift; Employee must be on-site by 8:30am
½-hour Unpaid lunch from 12:30pm-1:00pm
Overtime paid after 40 hours
Extended travel on weekdays and which may rarely bridge over a weekend or into the evening, for customer visits/outings and tradeshows globally. Common travel methods include air and car travel.
Hourly Rate: $35.00/hour
Overview:
Reports to Global Sales & Marketing Manager (GSMM)
Communicate with customers directly to acquire scope and requirements of each project
Develop equipment and project ideas, concepts, renderings, and solutions based on customer requirements
Assist with other general processes, including general layout and concept drawings, reports and documentation for Project Management and Operations, draft summaries of POPs, and videoing POP projects as required
Follow all trained processes and procedures, including inputting and extracting information from software sources and maintaining the confidentiality of its content
Research of past projects and use of historical data to support new project solutions
Use of SolidWorks to create new project designs, concepts, and renderings.
Keep skills up to date with current software, learn new software as needed/as the company grows.
Develop pricing for new projects, providing customer quotes, providing documentation as needed for project kick-offs.
Engage with and educate the customer directly and/or sales representative on project solutions, and pros and cons of options proposed.
Update the CRM with any customer feedback as required (minimal).
Create costing sheets for internal review
Generate POPs (proof of principles/concepts), POP reports, and simulations, participate in kick-off meetings, populate the network with all related project information, and integrate costing into SW models for repeat and concept projects
Collaborate and brainstorm with other departments including Sales, Management, Project Management, Quality, Design, Electrical Controls, Assembly, and Manufacturing
Adhere to Health & Safety guidelines, as well as VTR’s Mission, Vision, and Values
Other duties as required
What You'll Bring:
Strong knowledge of SolidWorks required
Experience within manufacturing or related automated equipment design preferred
Minimum three (3) years of experience in applications, engineering, and mechanical design roles, preferably within manufacturing and industrial equipment or similar environment
Strong understanding of mechanical and/or electrical systems
Postgraduate education in a related technical field.
Experience in a professional customer-facing role preferred
Ability to communicate ideas with confidence and in a concise manner via web, in person or in writing.
Experience proposing and/or presenting thoughts, findings, solutions
Experience creating reports and dashboards
Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office programs, including Excel, Outlook, Word, & Teams
Strong attention to detail, communication, and time management skills
Strong customer service, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills
Strong team player, with the ability to learn from others and transfer/disseminate knowledge clearly and in various forms
Demonstrates adaptability and the ability to adhere to tight deadlines
Ability to remain organized in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
Demonstrates innovative thinking and proactive/reactive problem-solving skills
Demonstrated commitment to quality and safety
Must maintain a valid driver’s license and Canadian passport
Ability to travel up to 10% of the time for customer visits and trade shows in both Canada and the US.
Must be able to adequately manage credit cards/corporate cards
Strong understanding of proprietary information and commitment to confidentiality
Additional Information:
Overtime after 40 hours
