Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Head Librarian, performs duties related to the circulation of library materials, including rare and archival. Organizes the daily operations of an area. Organizes, distributes, and verifies the work of others and participates in their training. Resolves problems. Provides information concerning library policies and resources. Processes library materials and interlibrary loan requests. Maintains equipment and supplies in area of responsibility.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide circulation and reader services support, including processing loans/returns/renewals/holds, assisting with basic searches and catalogue use, issuing library cards, and helping users access both circulating and rare/archival materials.
- Offer guidance on library and rare materials policies, supervise consultation and reading rooms, and ensure user compliance with handling rules and health/safety regulations.
- Assist with room reservations and coordinate access for rare or archival consultations.
- Process interlibrary loan requests by verifying availability, retrieving and preparing materials, or forwarding requests to external institutions.
- Manage related administrative tasks such as invoices, overdue notices, fines, and issuing receipts for payments.
- Maintain the physical collection through shelving, sorting, inventory, shelf reading, shifting, and searching for missing items.
- Support collection projects including relocation, offsite storage preparation, and digitization activities.
- Perform materials processing tasks, such as receiving and verifying shipments, applying barcodes, and scanning materials.
- Coordinate daily operations for the assigned service area, including distributing/overseeing tasks for others and assisting with staff training.
- Resolve service area issues, maintain records and statistics, and contribute to improving procedures and workflows.
- Perform opening/closing routines and operate standard office and library equipment.

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
DEC in Information and Library Technologies or Bachelor’s degree. Experience working in a client service focused environment with a proven ability to deal with people at all levels. Organizational, customer service and teamwork skills, problem solving ability, proven ability to work with automated systems, and a general understanding of a library environment. Physical requirements include moving and lifting weights of up to 20 kgs., handling dusty and other various types of library materials, shelving and shifting books, bending, walking (includes walking between buildings), working while standing. Demonstrated ability to work in a computerized environment. English, spoken and written. French, spoken. McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at level #(3) on a scale of 1-4.
