Position Summary
Under the direction of the immediate supervisor, performs technical duties related to dental hygiene for clinical, research or teaching purposes. Assigns patients. Assists staff and students in treatment of patients. Acts as resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Maintains equipment. Maintains records.
Duties in the Clinic
Radiology Providing support to students in taking intraoral radiographs on manikins/patients and to those experiencing difficulties with radiographic procedures. Reviewing radiographs for diagnostic quality and identifying concerns requiring review. Taking Panoramic, Cephalometric images and CBCT scan on patients. Providing operational support for panoramic imaging. Providing clinical support and identifying radiographic concerns on quality and technique during specialty and multi-disciplinary clinics. Organizing and transferring the radiographs emailed to the clinic to the appropriate files and communicating with the senders in case of need. Emailing/making CD of radiographic images for further treatment or consult such as extractions, endodontic etc. and for approval from the insurance companies. Maintaining the radiographic equipment in a good working condition and troubleshooting as much as possible. Communicating with the clinic manager in case any sensor requires further evaluation or repair. Ensuring radiology rooms are maintained according to infection-control requirements. Setting up the radiology rooms for taking radiographs by supplying and organizing the necessary items such as XCP(s), barriers, gloves, masks etc. Communicating with the sterilization staff in case of shortage of any tools.
Photography
Taking intra and extra oral images of the patients and their models. Uploading and downloading the images into appropriate files.
Periodontal
Providing clinical and operational support during periodontal examinations, data collection and charting. Provide clinical support for students scaling supra and subgingivally including smoothing the exposed part to the root, by using ultrasonic and hand instrument, polishing and applying fluoride varnish. Giving oral hygiene instructions and nutritional guidance to the students and patients. Demonstrating the students the correct way of positioning ergonomically. Observing the way students present themselves , following the protocol and the patient care in the clinic, such as tidiness, patient management and reporting to the clinic manager in case of any discrepancy. Adjusting/performing minor repairs on equipment in general.
Periodontal Surgeries
Providing clinical and operational support and assisting the pre and post-operative work such as disinfecting the surgical area, cleaning suctions etc. Preparation of all the necessary items required for the surgeries such as trays and several different materials. Making requests for materials needed, including communicating with the clinic manager regarding ordering some specific items such as bone, membrane etc. Monitoring compliance with established infection-control protocols and communicating concerns to the supervising clinical instructor. Providing any specific tools/items required during the surgery by requesting from the dispensary.
Duties in the Faculty Practice
Seeing patients for their regular recall appointments. Intra and extra oral examination. Hard and soft tissue chartings including complete periodontal charting.
Taking radiographs (intraoral and panoramic)
Sub and supra gingival plaque and tartar removal using ultrasonic and manual scalers. Polishing. Fluoride application. Oral hygiene instructions and nutritional guidance.
Sterilization
Location: Student and Staff Dental Clinic.
Other qualifying skills
OHDQ designation mandatory Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively English and French spoken and written.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment
Proven ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced, multi-tasking setting Ability to spend long hours standing, stretching, bending and light lifting.
