About the role

Location: Markham, Ontario

Job Description What is the role? The incumbent is responsible for developing and producing key analysis and reporting to support Finance, the Merchandise team and Senior management.

What will you do? Blue Box/Stewardship Obligations

  • Responsible for annual provincial Stewardship reporting (i.e. Blue Box).
  • Source packaging and sales information from the Financial Management System, work with the Replenishment team to incorporate vendor data, validate and analyze output, present results to senior management and file the final Stewardship results.
  • Attend Stewardship Committee Meetings with the Retail Council of Canada and with Producer Responsibility Organizations.
  • Monitor and advise senior management of any changes to the Stewardship obligations across Canada to ensure Pet Valu continues to meet those obligations in a timely manner.
  • Ensure data sourcing is kept up to date and continue to refine the process to improve efficiency and accuracy of results.

Vendor Billbacks

  • At month end, review and analyze vendor billbacks.
  • Work with Merchandising team and Accounts Payable to monitor vendor billback agreements to ensure completeness and accuracy.

Merchandise Damages

  • Play the lead role in damage analysis for Merchandise and related vendor recovery.
  • In addition to estimating monthly damage and special claims accruals, produce sticker markdown write off reporting monthly.
  • Work with the Replenishment and Merchandising teams to review and analyze damage claims quarterly, providing the Merchandising team with quarterly self-serve and rolling 12 damages reporting.
  • Generate quarterly damage billbacks to vendors and reconcile impact on financial statements.
  • Address product recalls, working with the Merchandising and Warehouse teams to summarize and issue credits to the vendor.

Banking & Accounts Payable

  • Support the process of converting and maintaining the majority of vendors on electronic payments to ensure timely payment and reduced payment processing costs.
  • Support with ad-hoc projects and analysis that relate to processes improvements and efficiencies within the AP department.

Month End/Quarter End/Year End

  • Work on period end processes, preparing various entries and reconciliations and supporting period end close review by developing and presenting variance analysis to senior management.
  • Analyze inventory on water and related foreign exchange adjustments, sales returns adjustments and other information as required.
  • Work with the external auditors on a quarterly and yearly basis.

Other Responsibilities

  • Support Director with other period end activities, ad hoc projects or analysis as required.
  • Perform control review for accounting operations processes. Escalate any gaps identified.
  • Ensure timely response to both internal and external customer and vendor requests, developing strong relationships with all groups.
  • Review standard operating procedures (SOPs) on a regular basis, updating and adding new SOP’s as needed.
  • Review existing processes and continuously look for improvements and efficiencies.
  • Act as a subject matter expert knowledge when required for system, process or reporting changes

What will you need to succeed? Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance
  • CPA/MBA preferred
  • Minimum 4 years of Accounting or Finance working experience

Knowledge and Skills

  • Advanced skills in MS Office (Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint)
  • Drive for results and nimbleness – ability to work independently, drive projects forward and meet targeted deadlines.
  • Strategic thinking and analytical skills – excellent analytical skills to identify risks and trends and discuss solutions.
  • Communication – excellent oral and written communicator and confidence in dealing with people across departments and with senior leadership.
  • Exposure to Microsoft Navision, Microsoft Dynamics 365 or other ERP system an asset
