Position Summary West Wood Industries is seeking an experienced and motivated Production Supervisor to lead daily manufacturing operations for the Millworks Division at our Scoudouc, New Brunswick facility. This position is responsible for supervising production activities across our sawmill, lumber drying (kiln), and millwork operations, ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective production of high-quality white pine lumber, finger-jointed wood products and door jambs.
The Production Supervisor will provide leadership to production employees, coordinate workflow between departments, maintain quality standards, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to support operational goals, customer requirements, and company objectives.
Key Responsibilities Production Leadership & Operations Supervise and coordinate daily production activities within the sawmill, kiln drying, finger-jointing, and millwork departments. Monitor production schedules and ensure manufacturing targets are achieved safely, efficiently, and on time. Coordinate manpower, equipment, and material resources to optimize production flow. Work closely with maintenance personnel to minimize downtime and maximize equipment performance. Ensure efficient movement of lumber through all stages of production, from rough sawn lumber to finished millwork products. Identify production bottlenecks and implement corrective actions to improve throughput and productivity. Participate in production planning meetings and communicate priorities to production teams. Collaborate with other department leaders, customers and key stakeholders to ensure production demands are met.
Safety & Compliance Promote and enforce a strong safety culture throughout the facility. Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety regulations, company policies, and safe work procedures. Conduct regular safety inspections, toolbox talks, and incident investigations. Ensure employees are properly trained on equipment operation and safety requirements. Monitor and enforce proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Collaborate with the Joint Health & Safety Committee, Safety Coordinators, and WorkSafeNB to help ensure the safety of the facility, equipment and staff is maintained.
Quality Assurance Maintain quality standards for white pine lumber, kiln-dried products, finger-jointed components, door jambs, and finished millwork products. Monitor production processes to ensure product specifications and customer requirements are consistently met. Investigate quality concerns and implement corrective actions when necessary. Collaborate with quality control personnel to reduce waste, defects, and rework.
Team Leadership & Development Lead, coach, and motivate production employees to achieve performance objectives. Conduct employee training, onboarding, performance evaluations, and ongoing development. Foster teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within the workforce. Manage attendance, scheduling, and workforce allocation. Participate in employee relations activities and address performance concerns when required.
Lumber Drying & Kiln Operations Monitor kiln schedules and drying processes to ensure lumber quality and production requirements are achieved. Coordinate kiln loading and unloading activities. Work with kiln operators to optimize drying cycles, reduce degrade, and maximize recovery.
Continuous Improvement Support Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives. Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) including productivity, yield, recovery, quality, downtime, and safety performance. Recommend and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and profitability. Participate in capital improvement projects and equipment upgrades.
Administrative Responsibilities Complete production reports and maintain accurate operational records. Monitor inventory levels of raw materials and work-in-process. Communicate effectively with management regarding production status, staffing, maintenance requirements, and operational challenges. Assist with budgeting and cost control initiatives as required.
Qualifications Education & Experience Post-secondary education in Manufacturing, Wood Products Processing, Business, Engineering Technology, or a related field is considered an asset. Minimum 3–5 years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing or wood products environment. Experience within sawmill, lumber drying, finger-jointing, or millwork operations is strongly preferred. Knowledge of wood manufacturing processes, lumber grading, drying, and millwork production is considered an asset. Experience with safety compliance and procedures in industrial or millwork environments is an asset Experience in best practices for operating or training operators with mobile equipment, such as forklifts and loaders
Skills & Competencies Strong leadership and team management skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities. Proven problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. Ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Strong understanding of workplace safety regulations and practices. Proficiency with Microsoft Office and production reporting systems. Mechanical aptitude and understanding of manufacturing equipment operations.
Physical Requirements Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, and varying temperatures. Ability to walk production areas regularly and perform facility inspections. This could include climbing ladders to equipment and platforms Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs. Wearing PPE such as Hard Hats Ear Protection Safety Glasses Steel-toed footwear
