Job Description:

Position Purpose summary:

The role assesses nutrition related issues of individuals and groups and develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition care plans to prevent, treat, and manage disease. The role manages food and nutrition service systems, and plans health promotion programs within the nursing home.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate nutrition programs and services for residents.
  • Manage food service systems in the nursing home.
  • Assist in revising cyclical menus to ensure it meets recommendations of Canada’s Food Guide, the nutritional needs of residents, special dietary needs and food preferences, within reason.
  • Provide nutrition guidance, label interpretation, and consultation services to residents and staff.
  • Evaluate nutritional status of residents and aid in the prevention and/or treatment of inadequate nutrition.
  • Plan, evaluate and conduct nutrition education programs and develop educational materials for staff, residents or families.
  • Practice as a member of an interdisciplinary team to determine nutritional needs of residents and to plan, implement and evaluate normal and therapeutic diets to maintain and enhance general health.
  • Analyze current scientific nutritional studies, conduct research and evaluate program effectiveness to improve the nutritional value, taste, appearance and preparation of food.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • Work is typically in the facility space.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • Requires attention to adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • The incumbent is required to lift up or move up to 20 pounds with no assistance from others.
  • May be exposed to disagreeable people, verbal abuse, people with behavioural or mental issues and may be exposed to hazardous cleaning chemicals.

Education, Experience and Qualifications

  • Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college certificate program and/or specialized courses or certification in the field of nutrition care.
  • Maintains membership with the New Brunswick Association of Dieticians.
  • Current First Aid/CPR certification
  • Two (2) years of prior related experience in nutrition care in a social services setting is required.
  • Experience working with a senior population will be considered as an asset.
  • Medical and Social Development Check required.
  • Able to provide Criminal Background Check screening and Vulnerable Sector Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner and assist personnel whom the position supports in developing those skills as required.
  • Knowledge of current quality improvement and risk management concepts and approaches with special emphasis on the prevention of falls and least restraint policies.
  • Maintains professional development through participation in education, conferences, in-services and workshops.
  • Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.

This position is a Part time position with 7.5 hrs per week.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $27.15 to $33.94 with a maximum of $40.72.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
