We are seeking a permanent Professional Engineer to join our Telecommunications Department in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Responsibilities:
- Design Fibre optic cable installations for multiple configurations. Prepare applicable technical specifications and configurations
for fibre optic cable, termination and splicing hardware as well as associated routing hardware (aerial and underground as
applicable).
- Specify performance, testing and analysis specifications, material procurement (including technical input to formal tender
documents and vender evaluation) and selection, engineering design drawings, bills of material, installation work packages,
asset database entries, and commissioning test procedures.
- As required, direct and collaborate with draftspersons, technical assistants, technicians and inspectors assigned to support
installations.
- Liase with both internal and external departments, suppliers, contractors, consultants, government agencies, and other utilities
or organizations as required to represent the interests of Manitoba Hydro to facilitate installation of fibre optic cable.
- Provide technical expertise for evaluation and recommendation of associated fibre test equipment.
- Responsible for design support and documentation for construction, commissioning and maintenance of fibre optic cable
systems.
- Identify and apply related regulatory and industry best practice to designs.
- Prepare Capital Project Justification reports, project reports and cost estimates, progress reporting, maintenance procedural
input, drawings and project workflow documentation to assist with initiation of related projects.
- Provide subject engineering design support for design team members, technical support staff which may include on-site
support of project activities anywhere in Manitoba.
- Regularly communicate with other departments, utilities, suppliers, and industry organizations to acquire and exchange
project-related requirements and information and to develop and maintain relevant expert level technical working knowledge.
- As required, make related technical presentations.
- Required to travel within and outside the province and occasionally outside the country in performance of duties.
- Understand and employ pertinent industry and utility practices and standards to address the design role for the corporation.
Qualifications:
- Graduate in Electrical Engineering from a University of recognized standing plus a minimum of four years engineering
experience including at least two years of directly related Telecommunications technical experience.
- Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a
specified amount of time).
- Demonstrated initiative and ability to carry out complex projects to successful completion (on schedule and budget) with

- Demonstrated KSA to plan, design, specify, organize, and arrange installation of Fibre cable systems. Includes primary route
and optical termination equipment.
- Demonstrated KSA to effectively use MS Office, SmallWorld PNI (TeleGIS), AutoCAD, SharePoint, SAP and network
management applications.
- Demonstrated KSA to improve procedures, processes, and strategies.
- Knowledge of Manitoba Hydro's Telecommunications systems.
- Demonstrated KSA to make engineering computations quickly and accurately.
- Willing to travel both inside and outside the province or country as required for project work or training.
- Must have a valid Province of Manitoba Class 5 Driver's Licence.
Salary Range
Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the Professional Engineer II classification is
$43.44-$59.95 Hourly, $83,247.84-$114,870.60 Annually. The range for the Engineer-in-Training classification is $32.51-$45.74
Hourly, $62,293.92-$87,654.58 Annually.
