About the role
Who are we?
AI4Eyes is a highly innovative SaMD (Software as a Medical Device) startup with a strong research foundation and a true startup mindset. Our mission and focus are to transform eye care through AI-powered clinical decision support systems, starting with dry eye disease: one of the most prevalent and underdiagnosed ocular conditions worldwide.
We bring together a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, researchers, Technical and Medical Advisory Board (TAB & MAB) as well as AI developers working closely with optometrists, ophthalmologists, and academic partners. Our work is guided by clinical reality: we collaborate directly with eye care professionals and are actively running clinical trials to ensure our technology addresses real-world needs. We also engage with academic and industry advisors who bring deep expertise in eye care, medical imaging, and artificial intelligence.
Innovation is at the core of our DNA. Our research is not designed to remain in publications or prototypes; it is built to become practical, validated tools that integrate seamlessly into everyday clinical workflows. We operate as a startup should: a small, agile team with fast execution, strong ownership, and a relentless focus on delivering measurable clinical impact for eye care professionals and their patients.
About the role
The AI Intern will play a key role in developing and evaluating the core AI algorithms powering AI4Eyes’ clinical decision support platform. This role is research-focused, hands-on, and highly technical, with a strong emphasis on robustness, and real-world performance of multimodal AI systems.
The intern will work under the supervision of Adjunct Professor at McGill University and closely collaborate with AI4Eyes’ Head of Technology, Hratch Soghomonian, who brings over 20 years of software development experience.
What You Will Do
- Train, fine-tune, and benchmark machine learning models using Python and PyTorch
- Work with annotated clinical images and videos collected through ongoing clinical trials
- Design and run experiments to evaluate robustness, failure modes, and reliability of multimodal clinical AI systems
- Stress-test models under noisy, incomplete, or adversarial clinical data
- Build experimentation and evaluation pipelines for healthcare AI
- Experiment with LLM orchestration frameworks such as LangChain and LangGraph
- Select, compare, and optimize models for clinical decision support use cases
- Run and manage large-scale experiments on cloud infrastructure (AWS or Azure)
- Contribute to patents and scientific publications
This role does not involve front-end or UI development.
Your Qualifications
- Enrollment in an MSc or PhD program in AI, Machine Learning, or a related field
- Strong programming skills in Python
- Experience with deep learning frameworks, preferably PyTorch
- Solid understanding of machine learning and large language models
- Ability to read, understand, and implement ideas from scientific papers
- Comfortable working on open-ended research problems
- Research experience leading to publications
Bonus if you have
- Experience with multimodal models (text + images)
- Familiarity with AI safety, robustness, or healthcare AI
- Experience running experiments on AWS or Azure
Internship Details
- Funded through the Mitacs program
- Two Mitacs units (8 months total), with the option to extend to one year
- Full-time research internship
- Applicant must be affiliated with a Canadian university for the full duration
- Preferred start date: January 2026 (flexible)
Why Join AI4Eyes
