Job Purpose:

The Community Ministries Coordinator provides holistic leadership to a limited range of community-based programs in accordance with The Salvation Army mission, values and standards.

Job Description:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves actively as a member of the management team for the Corps/Centre
  • Ensures that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities.
  • Gives oversight to and facilitate community ministries programs, ensuring ministry objectives are consistently accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all program initiatives
  • Provides spiritual guidance when appropriate and uses opportunities to pray with and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clients, staff and volunteers (linking clients to the church programs where possible)
  • Through empathetic care and with a non-judgemental approach provides intake services, client assessment, emergency assistance.
  • Provides direction and support to all community ministries staff so that they may develop spiritually and to ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization and enhance the ministries of The Salvation Army
  • In conjunction with Corps Officers, develops strategies and recommendations for staff and volunteer development, handles recruitment, orientation, performance management and terminations
  • Assists the Corps Officer with ongoing strategic planning to ensure programming reflects client needs as these may evolve in our changing socioeconomic climate
  • Provides input into the preparation of an operating budget for the community ministries programs and monitors/manages financial performance accordingly
  • Provides input in the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Community Ministries programs
  • Works with the Corps Officer to ensure that programs meet contractual, legal and internal accreditation requirements
  • Networks with The Salvation Army, government and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program
  • Engage and implement a local Emergency Response Plan, assisting with provincial/federal emergencies as required
  • May coordinate/organize annual donation and fund-raising efforts and/or special or seasonal programs (Christmas Kettle Campaign, Food Drives, Donation Drives, Christmas Hamper, Toy Distribution, Summer Camps, Community Dinners, etc.)
  • May provide visibility for The Salvation Army within the community through service club participation, media relations, general public relations, etc.
  • Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files and statistical records in the Link2Feed database
  • Assists in the organization, maintenance, general cleanliness, protocols of the Community Ministries Office and The Salvation Army building.
  • Drives large vehicle (EDS -Food Truck) to various locations around the city.
  • Works under the direction of the Corps Officers
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Education: Diploma or Certificate in Social/Human Services from a recognized University/College
  • Minimum 2 years related experience (including supervisory experience) working with families as well as vulnerable populations; addictions, mental health challenges, poverty, seniors, homelessness, unemployed, and persons with persistent multiple barriers.
  • Extensive knowledge and proficiency with MS Office programs, Database inputting and general office equipment
  • Current FOODSAFE LEVEL 1
  • Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
  • Valid Class 5 BC Drivers License
  • Assets – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, Effective communication 101, WHMIS.
  • Ability and willingness to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check screening.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Physically able to lift up to 50 lbs
  • The performance of the job requires a moderate amount of computer work
  • It can require loading/unloading trucks, handing out hampers, receiving/sorting out donated or purchased goods
  • Performance of the job requires attentive listening and conflict resolution (empathy to clients/staff/volunteers), and attention to detail when entering data/computer work.
  • The incumbent could need to work under the following disagreeable conditions:
  • Temperature variations when out in the CRU
  • Cramped working areas
  • Work-related stress
  • Dealing with clients that can be angry/abusive/complex emotional issues

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

  • The incumbent could be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
  • Physical and verbal attacks by others
  • Exposure to infectious diseases
  • Exposure to chemicals (e.g. cleaning)
  • Moving objects
  • Sharp objects
  • Risk of back strain

HOURS:

  • Part Time 25 hours / week.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $21.62 to $27.02 with a maximum of $32.43.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
