Job Summary

A Brief Overview

Reporting to the Associate Director, Communications and Digital Engagement, the Digital Communications Specialist plays a key role in advancing Smith Engineering's communication and engagement initiatives.

The Digital Communications Specialist will lead the development and execution of the Faculty's content strategy, collaborating with departments and stakeholders to create, publish, and distribute content across social media platforms (e.g. Facebook, X, Instagram, and LinkedIn), faculty websites, and newsletters. With a comprehensive and authoritative skill in graphic design and photography, the incumbent will also provide expertise on emerging trends, recommend strategies for brand management, and ensure all content aligns with the university's communication guidelines.

The Digital Communication Specialist will contribute to broader communication initiatives by developing and implementing communication plans, producing and editing content for print and digital channels, and coordinating the workflow of communication projects. This position will also support internal and external engagement through presentations, information materials, and digital publications, while measuring the impact of communications and recommending improvements.

This position develops, organizes, and implements communications strategies and plans that promote and profile departments, programs and services. This position performs market scans, recommends the focus of communications, and develops measurement criteria to evaluate effectiveness. This position also manages ongoing communication projects for publications and social media and serves as editor/publisher for print and digital publications.

The schedule for this position requires the incumbent to work frequent early mornings, evenings and weekends, according to program or area needs.

Job Description
What you will do
Develops, organizes, implements and measures communication plans and initiatives that promote and profile departments, programs, and services.

Provides input to assist with the development and implementation of communication plans.

Organizes the workflow of communications projects.

Scans media and works with the team to identify areas of focus for communications.

Writes articles, as well as prepares information sessions, presentations, Q&As, fact sheets, and other training and learning material.

Maintains content on the department's website.

Edits and proofreads copy for internal and external stakeholders.

Develops measurement criteria for evaluating the communication plans, measures effectiveness, and recommends changes for improvement.

  • Serves as editor/publisher for print and digital publications in the department.

  • Oversees the production of all of the department’s print communications and publications.

  • Facilitates the communication of issues and solutions with management, stakeholders, team members, and the Queen's community.

  • Serves as a contributing member on projects, committees, and working groups as required.

  • Deploys and administers surveys and tabulates results.

  • Develops creative concepts including graphic design, editorial illustrations, infographics, icons, imagery, templates, layouts, promotional materials, instructional strategies, and visual graphics to support the branding, marketing, communication, and/or course objectives.

  • Builds relationships and liaises with other departments, faculty, student leaders, external partners, and community resources.

  • Compiles, organizes, and analyses data to track the effectiveness of communications and engagement tools.

  • Other duties as required in support of the department and/or unit.

Required Education

  • Four-Year Bachelor Degree or equivalent. In addition, requires trade certification, qualification, or on-going learning to remain ahead of changes in technology or emerging fields.
    • in communications preferred.

Required Experience

  • More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
    • Experience in managing/developing strategic communication plans considered an asset.

    • Experience in writing, interviewing, reviewing, editing and/or proofreading internal and/or external communications and documents considered an asset (e.g., social media, policy manuals, newsletters, handbooks, legal documents, forms/templates, blogs, training/reference materials, technical documents, webinars, etc.).

    • Experience with assessing emerging trends, technologies, electronic platforms and potential digital business opportunities considered an asset (e.g., social media, etc.).

    • Experience in data, trend analysis and reporting considered an asset.

    • Experience developing, coordinating and producing promotional and marketing material considered an asset.

    • Experience working at a post-secondary education institution considered an asset.

Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.
