Position Overview: The Climbing Instructor ensures a safe, welcoming, and engaging climbing environment by delivering high-quality instruction, supporting daily climbing gym operations, and fostering positive experiences for all participants. This role exists to enable accessible and enjoyable recreation opportunities that enhance community well-being and quality of life. The position supports service delivery through instruction, customer engagement, operational coordination, and collaboration with team members and interest holders. By promoting safety, skill development, and inclusive participation, the role contributes to a vibrant recreation environment aligned with the Town’s values and community priorities. Core Accountabilities: Program Delivery and Instruction Deliver safe, engaging climbing instruction tailored to participant skill levels and needs Conduct orientations and belay tests to ensure participant readiness and compliance Apply recreational climbing best practices and techniques to support skill development Provide feedback and coaching to build participant confidence and progression Provide professional, safe, and engaging climbing experiences for all participants Customer Service and Participant Experience Welcome visitors and provide accurate information on programs, services, and facility use Verify waivers, orientations, and participant eligibility prior to activities Issue and fit rental equipment to ensure safe and appropriate use Respond to inquiries and resolve concerns respectfully and effectively Create a positive, inclusive, and supportive environment for participants and interest holders Climbing Gym Operations Monitor climbing gym floor activity to ensure safe and efficient operations Identify, address, and diffuse unsafe behaviour or improper equipment use Follow established standard operating procedures for safety and customer service Maintain general knowledge of Town of Canmore services to support customer needs Support scheduling, flow of activities, and operational coordination Maintenance and Equipment Oversight Perform basic inspection and maintenance of climbing equipment and facility features Support route setting activities and maintain climbing wall features Ensure equipment is safe, functional, and stored appropriately Report maintenance needs, hazards, or safety concerns promptly Ensure health and safety of co-workers, customers, and volunteers Administration and Continuous Improvement Maintain accurate records in compliance with Town of Canmore policies and procedures Use computer systems and applications (MS Office, Intelligenz, Dayforce) to support operations Adhere to confidentiality requirements, regulations, acts, and guidelines Stay current with industry safety standards and evolving practices Actively pursue training to enhance climbing, instruction, recreation, and administrative skills Team Collaboration and Leadership Support Collaborate with team members to support program delivery and daily operations Provide guidance and mentorship to less experienced staff as needed Share information to support coordinated and effective service delivery Contribute to a respectful, positive, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment Assist in organizing tasks and small groups to achieve operational goals Health and Safety Fulfill worker responsibilities under the Town of Canmore Health & Safety Directive Participate in the Town's health and safety program, following all legislation, policies, and procedures Perform work safely and protect the health and safety of self and others Refrain from causing or participating in harassment or violence Report incidents, injuries, and unsafe or harmful worksites, acts, or conditions Education, Experience & Certifications: Required Association of Canadian Mountain Guides (ACMG) Climbing Gym Instructor certification (Level 1, 2, or 3) Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED Demonstrated experience delivering climbing instruction and supervising participants in a recreation setting Significant recreational climbing experience, including route setting Experience working in a climbing gym or similar environment Strong knowledge of: Climbing techniques, belaying practices, and safety procedures Recreational climbing best practices and industry standards Applicable Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements Ability to: Safely manage groups, including children, in a dynamic recreation environment Identify hazards, respond to incidents, and maintain safe operations Prioritize tasks and adapt to changing operational needs Strong customer service, communication, and interpersonal skills Proficiency using computer systems and applications, including Microsoft Office and recreation management systems Ability to maintain accurate records and follow established procedures Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development Active commitment to safety and compliance with all safety protocols and procedures Preferred/Asset Additional ACMG climbing certifications or specialization in other climbing streams Training or certification in working at heights or fall protection Hi-Five (quality recreation programming) certification Experience with recreation and people software systems such as Intelligenz and Dayforce Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with a satisfactory driver’s abstract Experience supporting recreation program planning, evaluation, or service delivery Broader knowledge of municipal recreation services and community programming Salary & Benefits: Pay range: $27.79 to $30.08.
