Job Description: About The Role Reporting to the VP & CFO of GRS, this role is responsible for leading the GRS Actuarial Reporting team and generating financial metrics for group payout annuities and longevity insurance.

This role leads a high performing team that is responsible for GRS actuarial reserves totalling approximately $20 billion, as well as related risk metrics and capital requirements.

The successful candidate would be a highly motivated and energetic individual who is able to effectively interpret, explain and provide insights on actuarial results to senior management with the goal of promoting appropriate management action and awareness. This role will require an advanced understanding of actuarial and risk management principles and methods, and strong partnership with internal stakeholders including those from Actuarial, Asset Liability Management, Defined Benefit Solutions, Finance, Product & Pricing, and Risk Management.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Overall accountability of GRS actuarial components for IFRS reporting (including related liability and capital calculations)
  • Lead experience studies and decisions on actuarial assumptions and methods for group payout annuity and longevity insurance
  • Lead the timely and accurate delivery of contractual commitments for longevity insurance, especially for the mortality study, reset and data true-up provisions
  • Lead the timely and accurate preparation of GRS inputs to the annual Financial Condition Testing report
  • Lead the timely and accurate preparation of Earnings-at-Risk results and other developing risk appetite reporting for GRS
  • Lead the timely and accurate preparation of the actuarial inputs required for quarterly forecasting as well as annual Strategic and Business Plan processes
  • Lead initiatives to continually improve the efficiency and effectiveness of actuarial financial reporting processes in GRS
  • Ensure that GRS complies with applicable internal policies, professional standards, and regulatory requirements relating to the financial reporting of actuarial components, capital requirements and financial risk management
  • Annually review and update GRS' actuarial procedures
  • Support the assessment of new product pricing initiatives that have actuarial reporting implications
  • Partner with Defined Benefit Solutions and GRS Operations to support the implementation of higher complexity Pension Risk Transfer sales, including support for ongoing requirements of indexed annuities

What You'll Need To Succeed

  • Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (FCIA designation)
  • 10+ years of actuarial / risk management experience
  • Strong technical, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong creativity and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proven ability to drive for results and manage competing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders
  • Proven talent leadership and talent development skills
  • As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only as the position includes managing both French and English-speaking staff (Quebec and outside Quebec) and providing daily support to the team.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
