About the role
Energetic and motivated individuals needed to work as a Physician Assistant with a dynamic and collegial team. Reporting to Manager of the Emergency Department, the Physician Assistants will work in collaboration with Emergency Department physicians in accordance with the CPSO. The Physician Assistants will work in collaboration with emergency medicine physicians in accordance with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario’s policy on delegation and under Medical Directives.
The Physician Assistant will work within an interprofessional collaborative team model with various disciplines providing assessment & treatment for patients in the emergency department. The Physician Assistant will be involved in collecting and interpreting current, historical and diagnostic information about the patient for the purpose of establishing a diagnosis and treatment plan. The Physician Assistant will have the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population. As part of the inter-professional team, quality improvement will be part of the PA’s role and they will have an opportunity to research and perform administrative responsibilities. Responsibilities will also include coordinating and participating in policy and procedure development as well as education and professional development. They will act as a resource and consultant to individuals and groups within our professional community and other agencies and hospitals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Further responsibilities of this position include but will not be limited to:
- Assess, manage and disposition patients under supervising physician with a focus on:
- Lower acuity patients who require fewer investigation
- Patients that require a procedure before discharge eg: casting, suturing, I&D of minor abscesses
- Assist Physician with comprehensive discharge instructions eg: concussion, cast care etc
- Liaison with mental health allied health care (HANDS/Crisis) as it relates to patient care and documentation
- Assessing patients at triage during high flow times to disposition or order appropriate tests above the nursing medical directives. Goal to expedite care and disposition.
- Focus on the patients waiting to be seen the longest to improve P4R metrics.
- Functions as a competent user of our EMR and Dragon dictation software including CPOE and charting.
- Support ED Physicians with the delivery of patient care in Expanse ED module (EDM)
- Perform order entry under supervision Physician as needed
- Responsible for admissions in our EMR for patients they have accessed on behalf of the supervising MD
- Support discharge planning process and liase with nurses, GEM, home care, crisis worker/HANDS and ED allied health care providers to do so.
- Consult with other services and Physicians as needed to arrange specialist opinion, follow up or admission
- Participate in quality and workflow improvement in the ED
- Nursing QI committee
- Attend Emergency Medicine Department meetings monthly
- Attend Grand Rounds monthly
- Improvement and development of PA Medical Directives
QUALIFICATIONS
Certification/Experience/Knowledge:
- Graduate of the McMaster or Consortium Physician Assistant Program
- Registered with the CPSO
- Current BCLS Certification (recent as of one year) required
- Clinical Placements in in-patient medicine will be an asset.
- Experience with Meditech Expanse an asset

Ability to function both independently and as an active member of the multidisciplinary team in caring for all patients

Involved in continuing education on an ongoing basis and demonstrate commitment to quality improvement required

Good attendance work record required

Must demonstrate commitment to ensure your safety, the safety of fellow workers, patients, volunteers and visitors

Must support and contribute to a culture of safety and prevention of adverse health events

Bilingualism (Advanced level English/French) is required.
