Start Rate: Upon hire, Human Resources will conduct a rate calculation based on completed education and work experience to determine the step within the range as per the Collective Agreement.

Reporting to the Director, Equitable Learning, Health & Wellness, the Intercultural Counsellor will work within a multidisciplinary team to provide Mohawk College’s diverse student population with mental health and counselling support to address barriers to academic success.

What you’ll be doing:

The duties of this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Work closely with Indigenous Student Services and International Student Services departments to ensure the delivery and continuity of culturally appropriate counselling supports tailored to Indigenous and international students.
  • Provide walk-in, single-session, and ongoing counselling appointments utilizing evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions and culturally responsive and affirming approaches to address students’ personal concerns, mental health, career planning, and educational decision-making needs. Deliver direct in-person and virtual support to students experiencing a wide range of personal challenges, including complex and acute mental health concerns.
  • Facilitate access to internal and community services to support student needs within a stepped care model.
  • Supporting students in their transition to the college environment, recognizing the diverse social, cultural, and geographic contexts they may be arriving from to ensure they are welcomed and supported, from orientation through to graduation.
  • Advocacy and collaboration with College administration, faculty, and staff to identify service gaps and respond to evolving student needs.
  • Maintaining timely clinical records in accordance with college and professional standards.
  • Demonstrate intercultural competence and understanding of the complexity of elements impacting our diverse student population in relation to values, culture, communication styles, beliefs and practices.

What you’ll bring to the role:

  • A Master’s degree in a counselling-related discipline (e.g., Social Work, Counselling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Indigenous Health, Mental Health, Nursing), including a supervised clinical internship. Coursework or experience in Indigenous Studies or intercultural practice is considered an asset. Eligibility to practice the controlled act of psychotherapy in Ontario. Registration with OCSWSSW, CRPO, or an equivalent regulatory body is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of full-time experience providing counselling and/or psychotherapy in a mental health setting, with a proven record of adhering to professional and ethical standards.
  • Experience designing and delivering programs or workshops that support the unique experiences of international and/or Indigenous students.
  • Demonstrated cultural awareness and sensitivity to the diverse needs, lived experiences, and worldviews of Indigenous (First Nations, Métis, and Inuit) and international students.
  • Proven experience working with Indigenous, international, and other culturally diverse communities, including delivering or coordinating culturally informed services in intercultural settings.
  • Demonstrated ability in crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated self-awareness, knowledge, skills and attitudes essential for effective communication, relationship-building, and educating within a diverse setting is required.
  • Proficiency (or willingness to learn) in using technology to compliment clinical care and experience using an EMR/CRM platform strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to personal integrity, human rights, equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and reconciliation with experience working effectively inter-culturally with diverse groups of students, employees, and the community.
  • Counsellor may be required to travel to all campuses including those in partnership with Mohawk.
  • The ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse students, employees, and communities.
