Role Description This full-time, on-site Medical Doctor role is located in Nanaimo, BC. The Medical Doctor will provide comprehensive patient care, including conducting assessments, diagnosing conditions, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and developing evidence-based treatment plans. Daily responsibilities include managing patient caseloads, collaborating with interdisciplinary care teams, documenting clinical encounters in accordance with regulatory standards, and participating in care coordination and follow-up. The role involves educating patients and families about health conditions, preventive care, and treatment options, while promoting culturally safe and person-centered care. The Medical Doctor may also contribute to quality improvement initiatives, clinical teaching, and continuous professional development activities within Island Health.
Qualifications
Current medical degree (MD or equivalent) from an accredited institution and eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia. Certification in Family Medicine or relevant specialty (e.g., internal medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics) and good standing with applicable professional bodies. Demonstrated clinical skills in patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and follow-up care across diverse populations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams. Proficiency in maintaining accurate, timely clinical documentation and using electronic medical record systems. Commitment to evidence-based practice, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement in clinical care delivery. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, manage competing priorities, and make sound clinical decisions under pressure. Experience or interest in working in community-based care settings and supporting rural or underserved populations is an asset. CPR/BLS certification and other relevant clinical certifications as required by Island Health and regulatory standards. Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and culturally responsive care.
