The Parkland School Division currently has a Temporary Full-time (1.0 FTE) Carpenter position available at The Centre for Education in Stony Plain, AB.

Function and Purpose of Position

Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Carpenter will be responsible for all the woodworking and carpentry duties in the Division.

Service Responsibilities

  • responsible for manufacturing cabinets
  • general maintenance duties
  • moving furniture
  • operate skid steer and other equipment

Occupational Health and Safety & Safe Work Practices

  • Knowledgeable in PSD's safety procedures and training to carry out the assigned duties safely
  • Report any near misses or accidents immediately to the Maintenance Supervisor
  • Able to identify any hazards involved in the assigned task, detail the controls that must be put in place and articulate the specific practices to be followed to minimize the possibility of accidents and injury
  • Perform regular inspection of playground equipment, building exterior, interior and landscape/parking lot
  • Monitoring the physical condition of equipment, tools and machinery and taking necessary precautions to correct as needed
  • Comply with Occupational Health and Safety standards and practices

  • Working Alone
  • WHMIS Certification

Communication and Relationships

  • Interactions with management, colleagues, students and the public in a school setting
  • Responds to client concerns in a fast and efficient manner.
  • Establishes and maintains professional working relationships

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Task-specific PPE is required
  • Clothing must be appropriate for the assigned task, i.e. no torn or ragged clothing
  • Other additional PPE may include footwear, gloves, etc

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma
  • Certificates:
  • Journeyman Carpentry ticket, cabinetmaker or equivalent
  • Possession of a Valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required

b) Experience:

  • Maintenance experience in a Carpentry role would be considered optimal
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Email and Internet Computer Applications would be an asset.

Physical Demands

The Carpenter will be required to routinely lift items weighing up to 50 lbs. Sometimes, heavier lifting may be required.

  • Ability to climb stairs/ladders frequently to varying heights
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work regularly
  • Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing up to 90 lbs and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment
  • Repetitive and strenuous work

  • Ability to work in various indoor and outdoor weather conditions

Additional Information

Carpenters must agree to respect the confidentiality and personal integrity of students, parents, teachers and other staff.

Hours of Work: 40 hours /week (Monday to Friday 8 AM to 4:30 PM)

Pay Rate: $40.81 per hour

This position requires an original copy of a current clean criminal record check with vulnerable sector and an original copy of a child intervention record check.

This position is covered by the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local No. 955 Collective Agreement.
