Position Summary We are seeking a visionary and results-driven Senior Director of Research to lead our research initiatives. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of water treatment, environmental science and engineering, a proven track record of leading cross-functional teams, and experience translating scientific discovery into scalable products or solutions (i.e. UV, membranes, advanced treatment technologies such as contaminant destruction) in water, wastewater markets worldwide.
Accountabilities Strategic Leadership:
- Develop and execute a multi-year research strategy aligned with the company’s mission and commercialization roadmap.
- Help shape company strategy through science-informed decisions, ensuring R&D priorities align with business goals and market opportunities.
- Identify emerging science and technology and trends in water treatment, remediation, resource recovery, and sustainability.
- Lead and oversee internal R&D programs within budget (e.g. disinfection, contaminant destruction, advanced membranes).
- Evaluate and prioritize research projects based on feasibility, impact, and alignment with current/future regulatory drivers.
- Present research outcomes to executive leadership, investors, and external stakeholders.
Talent Development:
- Build and mentor a high-performing research team, including scientists, engineers, and technologists.
- Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and scientific rigor that defends and grows Trojan’s differentiated value.
- Support ongoing development of career tracks and progression across the research team to retain and attract/recruit top talent.
Technical Leadership:
- Serve as the scientific expert across the company, providing insights to product development, business development, and regulatory teams.
- Set high level direction for laboratory operations, testing, and scale-up studies to validate performance under real-world conditions, including adherence to applicable safety and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to drive technology from lab scale through pilot testing to commercial deployment through data-driven decision making.
- Establish and track KPIs to measure R&D effectiveness, innovation impact, and alignment with business goals.
- Ensure technical reports, white papers, and peer-reviewed publications support the innovation strategy.
External Collaboration:
- Partner with academic institutions, government agencies, and industry consortia (e.g. IUVA, WateReuse, AWWA, WERF, OCWA, NSERC on joint research programs and grants to enhance and accelerate innovation initiatives.
- Strong communicator with good public speaking skills and expertise in thought leadership.
- Support IP strategy, including patent filings and competitive landscape analysis.

Qualifications
- Ph.D. in Water Treatment, Environmental Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in scientific research, with a focus on water treatment or related technologies.
- Proven track record of leading and managing research teams, with a demonstrated ability to drive innovation, achieve research goals including commercialization of innovations.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and translate complex scientific concepts into practical solutions. Demonstrated experience in setting and measuring R&D performance metrics.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Passion for sustainability and a commitment to advancing the science of water treatment, with demonstrated ability to translate research into practical solutions that address real-world water and wastewater challenges globally.
