What you'll do
A Vehicle Tradesperson, Welder and Metal Fabrication repairs, maintains, modifies, and commissions vehicles and
equipment, including the fabrication of specific components. This includes using telematics to proactively manage
nondestructive testing safe for use structural welder repairs. BC Hydro fleet consists of 3,000 vehicles including passenger
vehicles (e.g. cars, SUVs, passenger vans), light vehicles (e.g. pick-up trucks, commercial vans, flat deck trucks), heavy
vehicles e.g. man lifts, digger derricks, crane trucks), mobile machines (e.g. fork lifts, self-propelled man lifts) and trailers (e.
g. pole trailers, reel trailers, utility trailers). Fleet Services delivers the service via a main maintenance garage, satellite
workshops and mobile work shops.
As an apprentice in this trade, you would:
- Work with a Journey person to repair, maintenance, modification and commissioning of vehicles and equipment.
- Work with Driver/Helper
What you bring
- Graduated from high school with the following courses: English 12, Math 11 and Physics 11 / Science & Technology 11
(or equivalents). Level 1 or foundations be an equivalent to Physics 11 / Science & Technology 11
- BC Welder Foundations qualification or Level 1
- 1 year experience in trade would be an asset, heavy vehicles would be a preference.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and familiarity with industrial tools/equipment
- Valid B.C. Class 5 driver's license
- Basic computer skills
- Strong commitment to safety, WorkSafeBC requirements and safe working practices
What we offer
THE PROGRAM
The Vehicle Tradesperson, Welder and Metal Fabrication repairs apprenticeship involves 36 months of on-the-job and
classroom training, repairs, maintains, modifies, and commissions vehicles and equipment, including the fabrication of
specific components. Graduation from the program will include successful completion of either BC Welder Trade
qualification or Welder Interprovincial Red Seal Endorsement.
THE FUTURE
Graduated apprentices can apply on any vacancies for Vehicle Tradesperson, Welder and Metal Fabrication within BC
Hydro, including mobile opportunities.
THE LOCATION
During your apprenticeship, you will be assigned to Surrey vehicle garage. You will be required to do 2 to 3 rotations in
alternate headquarters across the province for up to 2-3 weeks each during your apprenticeship.

Apprentices earn 75% of the full trade rate with further increases during the apprenticeship. The apprentice pay rate is

pay, disability income, health and vision care, and dental benefits.
