About the role
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides technical expertise to organize, deliver, and support research, laboratory, and academic safety programs and training that promote a safe and inclusive environment for the university community and ensure compliance with occupational health and safety requirement
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- Knowledge of research safety methods, practices, regulations, policies, and procedures
- Knowledge of building mechanical systems including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and control systems and their application in health and safety
- Knowledge of governing legislation, by-laws, and regulations (e.g., building codes, Transportation of Dangerous Goods, hazardous waste, biological and radiological licensing, and occupational health and safety)
- Knowledge of office as well as the broader university academic units, departments, and divisions would be an asset
- Knowledge of emergency response protocols and procedures, including hazardous materials.
- Working knowledge of office productivity tools and databases; discipline-specific software; enterprise systems (e.g., Banner); and general technology and internet competency.
- Knowledge of cultural competency and diversity in a business context
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
- Completion of bachelor’s degree in science or engineering or risk related field
- Professional designations/certifications for the area of oversight (CRSP, CRST, RSO, RBSO, LSO, CIH or CHSC) considered an asset
- Minimum of three years of previous experience in occupational health and safety
