Situated 10 kilometers west of Kamloops, British Columbia, the New Afton Mine is an underground gold and copper producing site.
Kamloops is a city of 90,000 people, located 350 kilometers east of Vancouver. Position Reports To: Senior Surface Geotechnical Engineer
Position Overview
The New Afton Tailings and Surface team is seeking a motivated and experienced Geotechnical Engineer to provide direction and technical support for tailings and surface operations, with a strong focus on geotechnical risk management and operational safety. Ongoing block cave-induced subsidence creates a dynamic and challenging environment that offers opportunities to grow expertise while directly contributing to safe and efficient site operations.
Reporting to the Senior Surface Geotechnical Engineer and working collaboratively with a team of geotechnical consultants and site personnel, the Surface Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for a broad range of surface geotechnical initiatives. The role offers opportunities to manage projects, lead site investigations and trials, set priorities, and advance instrumentation and monitoring practices that support geotechnical safety and performance.

Key Responsibilities
- Ensure geotechnical safety considerations are at the forefront of decision-making
- Assist with geotechnical hazard identification and support risk assessments.
- Review and interpret slope stability monitoring data to support safe worksite access.
- Participate in dam safety reviews and Independent Tailings Review Board meetings.
- Update, support, and implement the New Afton Subsidence Management Plan
- Interpret and communicate subsidence forecast outputs to stakeholders.
- Conduct screening-level subsidence risk assessments for surface infrastructure.
- Coordinate and direct subsidence monitoring fieldwork and activities.
- Organize and lead semi-quarterly, quarterly, and annual subsidence reviews (presentations, tours, reports) for interdepartmental and external stakeholders. Prepare and deliver subsidence findings as requested.
- Communicate current and forecasted interpretations of subsidence progression.
- Scope and develop budget estimates for professional services related to subsidence monitoring.
- Documented field reviews of management plan implementation.
- Support and implement site surface stockpile management plans
- Coordinate Engineer of Record (EOR) field reviews and management plan updates.
- Documented field reviews of management plan implementation.
- Support continual improvement of surface and sub-surface geotechnical instrumentation monitoring systems.
- Provide oversight for planning, installation, maintenance, and monitoring of geotechnical instruments.
- Scope and prepare budget estimates for sub-surface investigations and instrumentation installation.
- Manage, coordinate services, and review work by external geotechnical monitoring contractors and vendors.
- Perform QA of geotechnical monitoring measurements, investigate anomalies, communicate with end-users, and scope mitigation measures where required.
- Ensure professional practice compliance.
- As an EGBC registrant, ensure that work performed personally or delegated within scope of practice complies with New Gold’s Professional Practice Management plan.
Qualifications

Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Geotechnical, Geological, Civil or Mining Engineering (preferably with specialization in Geotechnical Engineering).

Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration with Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia EGBC, or eligibility for registration.

6+ years of progressive geotechnical engineering experience in mining, natural resources, or consulting.

Minimum 2 years as a registered P. Eng. (or international equivalent).
-
Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical findings into clear, actionable insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.

Demonstrated experience in development, calibration, and interpretation of geotechnical models.
-
Experience with GIS (e.g. Global Mapper), geological model (e.g. Leapfrog), and/or geotechnical instrumentation (e.g. Geomonitoring Hub) software is considered an asset.

Experience with installation, monitoring, and interpretation of geotechnical and survey instrumentation.

Experience in open pit monitoring or slope hazard assessment.
-
Proven ability to manage consultants and contractors effectively.
-
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary team environment.

Experience in resource road design and surface water management is considered an asset.

Candidates will be required to participate in a comprehensive qualification process, including:

Provide proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license

Demonstrate eligibility to work in Canada

Provide confirmation of valid educational requirements
Compensation
The anticipated salary for this position will be between $110,000 to $120,000. A comprehensive benefits program and performance bonus plan will also be provided. This is not a camp operation and therefore the successful candidate will be required to relocate to the Kamloops area or travel and accommodation will be the responsibility of the successful applicant.
