Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care is a 315-bed academic and teaching hospital that provides specialized mental health, addiction and geriatric care. Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, we serve some of the most complex and disadvantaged individuals in Ontario and are the sole provider of high-secure forensic mental health services in the province.

The Manager of Rehabilitation Services is currently seeking a Full-Time Physiotherapist Assistant. The purpose of the position is to provide support to the multidisciplinary clinical team in the delivery of patient care and collaborate in the development of the service and maintenance of the standards of practice of the profession.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Participate in the planning and provision of individualized Physiotherapy Therapy (PT) programs under the supervision of the PT, records patient treatment and responses, and contributes to the revision/progression of therapy programs.
  • Motivate and encourage patients to meet intervention goals established by the patient, therapist, and clinical team.
  • Adapt communication to meet the individual needs of a patient, and provide patient and/or family education (within scope) and reinforces patient/family education provided by the therapist during assigned activities.
  • Observe, monitor, and report the patients’ responses, performance and progress toward expected outcomes to the PT both verbally and through documentation in the electronic medical record.
  • Inform the PT and clinical team promptly of significant changes in the patients’ functional or health status; review the patient’s health record prior to providing treatment and communicates with the health care team as appropriate.
  • Maintain documentation in accordance with OT and PT policies and procedures, and corporate standards.
  • Attend rounds and meetings as directed by the therapist(s) to both give and receive verbal communication regarding patient status; communicate in a professional manner employing verbal, written, and electronic communication methods. Develop, build, and maintain collaborative working relationships through effective communication.
  • Perform non-patient care activities to assist OT and PT service delivery (e.g., equipment inventory and maintenance).
  • Maintain current knowledge of activities appropriate for patient treatment programs. Participate in profession specific and program quality improvement initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A combined OTA/PTA certificate course from an accredited college or equivalent education is required.

  • Current BCLS certification is an asset.

  • Experience working with geriatric settings or populations is considered an asset.

  • Results oriented work ethic to work independently and undertake tasks needed to accomplish work objectives and deliver quality, consistent and timely results

  • Demonstrated leadership, conflict resolution, interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Proven written and verbal communication skills

  • Proven ability to adapt readily to change and reflects an optimistic and positive attitude

  • Models and promotes core ethical practice, Waypoint Values (Caring, Respect, Accountability, Innovation)

  • Preference for proficiency in French/English language skills.
