##Position Description

Purpose

The purpose of this position is to assist school staff in the operation of the school program by providing support, assistance and supervision to students, as well as providing clerical support services.

Accountability

  • Providing student support services as part of the school community to create an effective and positive learning environment for CBE students;
  • Providing efficient and accurate clerical support to the operation of the school program; and
  • Interacting positively with students in the school program by modelling and encouraging appropriate and positive behaviour.

Major Responsibilities

  • In a program structured by the teacher, works with students in small groups or on an individual basis. Assists in remedial work, reinforcement or practice of skills, or the preparation of individual or small group projects. May oversee the work of a class while the teacher works with small groups or individuals as necessary. Assists in the maintenance of records and files.

  • Assists teachers in the preparation of curriculum materials and tests. Types, draws diagrams, duplicate and collates materials. Operates laminating and duplicating equipment as required. Assists in the operation of audio-visual equipment.

  • Circulates curriculum materials, assignments and tests, distributes and collects materials and maintains associated records. May assist in marking exams or worksheets from a key provided.

  • Assists in the supervision of students on playgrounds, halls, games areas, or lunchrooms as required. Remains alert to all situations that may represent a risk to students. Supervises the loading and unloading of students onto busses as assigned. Deals with minor issues with students as required.

  • May assist in marking exams, worksheets, or workbooks from a key provided. May supervise testing areas, halls or lunchroom areas or assist teachers in classrooms as required. Monitors and reports student's behaviour, achievement, or motivation to the teacher as required.

  • May assist in organizing and supervising on field trips and other off-campus activities.

  • Assists in classroom management activities, such as the preparation of solutions or paints, setting up or clean-up of rooms and tables, preparation of displays, bulletin boards, etc.

  • May contact parents of absent students as appropriate.

  • May assist in the set-up and operation of noon supervision program by safely setting up and storing tables, receiving and recording money for milk or emergency lunches, etc. Supervises students in the noon supervision program while encouraging good manners and eating habits. May set out milk or hot water apparatus. May operate basic equipment, such as a microwave, etc, to help students prepare their lunches. Effectively and efficiently cleans up the lunch area. Wipes tables, chairs, etc. Ensures proper disposal of garbage and litter into designated garbage cans.

  • May suggest, organize and supervise games or appropriate activities. May sign out or oversee the distribution of equipment, materials or games. Maintains all associated records.

  • Performs other related responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school completion
  • Six months related experience, preferably working with students in a group setting
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certificates preferred

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

  • Fluency in French and English
  • Data entry skills, with an emphasis on accuracy
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an emphasis on customer service
  • Ability to relate to and appreciate students, parents and staff
  • Ability to participate collaboratively in a creative learning team environment
  • Ability to be alert and respond appropriately to situations of risk
  • Ability to work with constant interruptions and change
  • Personal suitability
