About the role

###Overview

The Law Society of Alberta regulates the legal profession in the public interest by promoting and enforcing a high standard of professional and ethical conduct by Alberta lawyers.

Our independent adjudicators ensure that disciplinary hearings are fair, timely, transparent and conducted in the public interest. These adjudicators include Benchers (board members), former Benchers, non-Bencher lawyers and members of the public.

The Law Society of Alberta’s Tribunal Office is currently recruiting for six (6) members from the public (non-lawyers) to serve a three-year term as adjudicators, with possibility for renewal for up to two (2) additional terms.

###Role of Adjudicators

Core adjudicative responsibilities include presiding over disciplinary hearings, typically as a Hearing Committee of three (3), determining matters in accordance with the law and in a manner consistent with the public interest, and rendering high quality written decisions.

###Desired Skills and Attributes

  • Public members are required to have work, professional or management experience or a leadership role in community service.
  • Analytical and critical thinking required.
  • Experience in objective decision making
  • Ability to use technology to be able to navigate virtual hearings and handling of electronic documents.
  • Eager to work in a collaborative and collegial environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to write clearly and effectively in a timely fashion.
  • Previous experience as an adjudicator, and/or versed in professional regulation and application of professional standards are considered an asset.
  • Understanding of the application of legislation, regulations and codes of conduct is considered an asset.
  • Willingness to devote 10-20 days per year to adjudicative matters.

###Remuneration and Time Commitment

Public adjudicators receive a modest per diem in addition to being reimbursed for expenses.

Adjudicator orientation will take place in May after appointment. Adjudicators are also required to complete the Adjudicator Training Program (ATP) within 90 days of being appointed to the Adjudicator Roster and prior to appointment on an adjudicative panel. The ATP is completed through online modules totaling approximately 25 hours. One or two live training sessions and workshops will also take place annually.

Adjudicators will be canvassed for their availability to sit on hearings regularly. The ultimate appointment of a panel is done by the Chair of Conduct Committee. Appointment to panels depends on each adjudicator’s availability and the number of hearing days required. Hearing time will fluctuate but most hearings are a half day to one day in duration, starting at 9:00am.

Hearings are held virtually but there is the potential for a hearing to be held in-person at the Law Society offices in Calgary.

###Additional Information

The Law Society of Alberta believes that having a diverse group of adjudicators is essential to uphold and protect the public interest, and we want to reflect these values in our Adjudicator Roster with various personalities, backgrounds, and perspectives. We believe that having diversity will ensure that our regulatory goals are met and protect those who use legal services.
