About the role

Think back—was there ever an elevator ride that made you go, “Whoa, this is nice”?

Maybe it was an elegant glass lift or a minimalist stainless-steel rocket.

It might have shaped your first impression or left a lasting memory of a building.

Chances are, the details made the difference; with an aesthetic interior and stylish, well-built buttons and fixtures. Immersive digital technology like visual displays may have turned a simple ride into a memorable experience as well. You may not have noticed these details then, but once you’ve worked with us, you’ll start noticing them everywhere you go.

Company Overview

We have a vision – to have a MAD product in every elevator. Headquartered in Mississauga Canada, our 80,000 sq. foot facility focuses on the efficient production of industry-leading fixtures, high quality elevator car interiors, and cutting-edge digital products.

At MAD, we set you up to be the expert – providing the tools, support, and environment to help you thrive. From there, it’s all you – your drive and ideas lead the way. MAD has been ranked among Canada's top 500 fastest growing companies, one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies, a Best Places to Work in Canada, and among Best Employers for Recent Graduates.

Our New R&D Mechanical Designer

As an R&D Mechanical Designer, you will design and develop the mechanical aspects of new products and initiatives (interiors, fixtures, shell systems, enclosures, brackets, structural components, and electromechanical assemblies) from concept through to production-ready design. Working within the R&D team, you will translate product requirements into robust models, detailed drawings, and validated prototypes. You will collaborate closely with electrical, firmware, and production teams, and provide design support across the organization including sales, marketing, and other departments to bring new products to market.

The ideal candidate is an intermediate-to-senior mechanical designer/engineer with hands-on prototyping ability and 3D CAD skills who can own designs independently, work with minimal supervision, and bring new product ideas to a manufacturable reality.

What you will do in the role

Product Development & New Product Initiatives

  • Design and develop the mechanical components a product requires primarily in 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Inventor), with 2D CAD for less complex needs, from concept through production-ready design.
  • Lead or support complex and custom product development projects requiring advanced design expertise and judgment.
  • Produce accurate 3D models, detailed drawings, and bills of materials with low to zero drawing errors.
  • Conduct prototype builds and basic assembly of golden samples, including design validation and testing.
  • Provide technical input to support cost estimates, product pricing, and technical proposals.
  • Support product certification and compliance activities (e.g., ETL/Intertek, CSA, ASME A17.1/B44) where required.

Production Support

  • Provide hands-on technical support to the manufacturing production team.
  • Support the production team on problem solving, corrective actions, product improvement, and new product development.
  • Develop assembly procedures, work instructions, and supporting technical documentation.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Support

  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews and coordinate design decisions with electrical, firmware, and production teams.
  • Provide design support to other departments, including sales and marketing. For example, technical input for proposals, product information, and sales and marketing materials.
  • Work with project managers, suppliers, and cross-functional teams to support project execution and delivery.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior designers as required.

Other

  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Able to lift up to 15 lbs; may work in hot areas 5%, noise 0%.
  • Ensure adherence to Health and Safety as well as active participation in 5S activities in the work area.

Measures of Success

  1. Project Delivery: ≥90% of design milestones, drawings, and engineering deliverables completed on time.
  2. Design Accuracy: ≥95% drawing, model, and BOM accuracy with minimal post-release revisions.
  3. Manufacturability: New product designs released with minimal production-related engineering changes and reduced manufacturing rework.
  4. Prototype & Validation: ≥90% of prototype builds and validation activities completed according to project schedules.
  5. Production Support: Root Cause Analysis completed for major product and manufacturing issues, with measurable reduction in recurring design-related defects.
  6. Cross-Functional Support: Technical requests and design support delivered accurately and within agreed service expectations.
  7. Continuous Improvement: Design standards, processes, and tools continuously improved, resulting in greater efficiency, consistency, and product quality.

What you bring to the role

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or equivalent relevant experience
  • Minimum 5 years of mechanical design experience, including sheet metal design (intermediate to senior level)
  • Experience in manufacturing industry preferred
  • Experience designing mechanical components and assemblies such as enclosures/shells, brackets, plates, and supporting structures; understanding of elevator interiors and fixtures an asset
  • Strong ability in mechanical design, including modeling, detailing, and design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Hands-on experience with 3D CAD (SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor) required.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD for 2D drawings and layouts, used for less complex design needs
  • Knowledge of electronics and electrical principles
  • Strong understanding of quality requirements and design flow
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to drawing accuracy.
  • Strong analytical skills, highly logical problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail
  • Active Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) status an asset
  • Prior experience with Jira and Confluence an asset
