About the role

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.

Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

Position Overview:

This position will involve assisting co-curators of the exhibition Beading Metis Resurgence, opening at Gallery 1C03 on February 12, 2026. Anticipated tasks include assisting co-curators with planning and executing community panels, workshops and events, assist with exhibition catalogue production, general arts admin tasks.

Duties:

  • Assist with scheduling of artwork transportation and drop-off of artworks.
  • Assist in installation and takedown of the full art exhibition in Gallery 1C03.
  • Assist with organizing the exhibition opening event, including creating a schedule, arranging food and supply delivery and pick up, hosting and caretaking of guest speakers, artists, and special guests.
  • Working with Gallery 1C03s Indigenous Art Workshop Assistant in organizing and hosting all art-making workshops, including communicating with registrants, guest artists, partnering organizations and departments at UW, preparing supplies as needed, assisting with set up and take down and hosting guests to these workshops.
  • Assisting in the organization of public panels and events after the exhibition
    opening. This may include set up, take down, organizing registration, communicating with registrants and guest speakers, assisting with payment for guest speakers and artists.
  • Assist in locating relevant research resources for promotion of the exhibition, and public panels as needed. This may include researching the history of Metis beadwork, materials used, contemporary Indigenous art practices, etc.
  • Assist with community outreach and promotion of the exhibition and programmed events, including providing descriptions and key info for public announcements, assisting with poster production, helping to schedule media interviews, creating lists of individuals and organizations to contact for these events.
  • Attend general meetings with co-curators and document proceedings, share notes, follow up on key tasks as required.
  • Communicate with exhibiting artists and exhibition sponsors as required throughout the project.
  • Assist in the production of the exhibition catalogue. This may include helping to send out contracts to artists, graphic designer and guest writers.
  • Working closely with co-curators, guest writers, graphic designer and printers for the smooth and timely execution of the exhibition catalogue.
  • Compiling edited texts and images for the curators and graphic designer.
  • Assisting in formatting artist bios, list of works, and catalogue layout.
  • Conducting general research on exhibition topic for writers of the catalogue.
  • Assisting in de-installation of exhibition, and writing condition reports for artwork after exhibition is over.
  • Assisting in the crating and packaging of artworks for return shipment and pickup. Scheduling pick up times of artwork.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned, such as monitoring the budget expenses
  • Compile reading resources for the exhibition space on exhibition topic.

Qualifications:

  • Preferred area of study is art history or curatorial practices.
  • Honours BA in Art History Majors, or Grad students in the Curatorial Practicum Stream of Cultural Studies preferred.
  • Completion of HIST-4815/GENG-7820: Miyeu Pimaatshiwin, Beading, and Métis Kitchen Table Talk, or HIST-4833/GENG-7820:Indigenous Theory and Curatorial Practices preferred.
  • GPA of 3.5 and above required.
  • Previous experience working on art exhibitions with galleries, museums or art organizations.
  • Experience working with graphic and web designers an asset.
  • Ability to assist with the design of exhibition labels and vinyl lettering.
  • Experience with beading or attending beading workshops an asset
  • Ability to physically assist in lifting, placing and hanging artwork and labels.
  • Ability to work in smaller, dimly lit spaces comfortably.
  • Ability to carry moderately heavy objects, like chairs, toolboxes, etc.
  • Ability to be in front of a computer for long periods of time for research tasks and general admin and communication work.
  • Comfortable with working with the public at large.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • Comfort with having to communicate with many individuals throughout the project.
  • Strong ability to adapt to the needs of artists, community members, curators and gallery staff.
  • Strong research and writing abilities.
  • Ability to take instruction and execute tasks in a timely manner.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.

The period of work will be from February 11, 2026 - May 30, 2026, and the estimated total hours of work will be 200-240 hours.
