The Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) provides inclusive and culturally responsive speech and language services to students with diverse needs using strategies aligned with the Pyramid of Intervention. The SLP addresses communication and language-literacy needs impacting school participation and performance, integrates functional strategies into the student’s program, and collaborates with school teams, multi-disciplinary team members, and families to build capabilities. Their expertise is critical for identifying, diagnosing, and treating communication delays and disorders.

Responsibilities and Activities
1. Diagnostic & Consultative Support (45%)
- Deliver direct speech, language, and literacy interventions to students from pre-K to Grade 12.
- Use a variety of assessment tools and techniques to gather comprehensive data on student abilities.
- Interpret assessment results and develop individualized treatment plans tailored to each student's needs.
- Offer consultative support to school staff and families to address communication and language learning needs.
- Integrate functional strategies into students' programs to enhance communication skills.
- Monitor and evaluate student progress and adjust intervention plans as needed.
- Collaborate with teachers to incorporate speech and language goals into classroom activities and routines.
- Communicate assessment findings to parents, teachers, and other professionals to inform intervention planning.
2. Supervise and Mentor Therapeutic Assistants (25%)
- Supervise Therapeutic Assistants in implementing targeted and specialized strategies.
- Provide training and coaching to ensure high-quality service provision to students and schools.
- Mentor Therapeutic Assistants to develop their skills and knowledge in speech and language interventions.
- Oversee the application of intervention techniques and provide feedback for improvement.
- Ensure consistency and effectiveness in the delivery of speech and language services.
3. Collaborate with School Teams (10%)
- Work closely with school staff and other multi-disciplinary team members to design and implement communication strategies that enhance student learning, independence, and participation.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss student progress, share insights, and develop coordinated intervention plans.
- Foster a collaborative environment by sharing expertise and supporting team members in their roles.
- Contribute to the development of school-wide initiatives to support communication and language development.
4. Provide Expertise on Augmentative/Alternative Communication (10%)
- Assess and implement Augmentative/Alternative Communication (AAC) systems for students with complex communication needs.
- Support applications to Alberta Aids to Daily Living for communication device approval.
- Train students, families, and staff on the use of AAC devices and strategies.
- Monitor the effectiveness of AAC interventions and make adjustments as necessary.
- Stay informed about new AAC technologies and best practices to enhance service delivery.
5. Participate in Professional Development (10%)
- Create and deliver professional development sessions for division staff and community partners on communication, language, and literacy.
- Develop training materials and resources to support the implementation of speech and language strategies.
- Provide ongoing support and coaching to staff to enhance their skills and knowledge.
- Evaluate the impact of professional development activities and make improvements based on feedback.
- Engage in continuous learning to stay updated with advancements in the field of speech-language pathology.
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
Knowledge:
- Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology (MScSLP).
- Registered with the Alberta College of Speech and Language Pathologists and Audiologists (ACSLPA) and hold a valid practice permit.
- Minimum three years of related experience in classroom-based service delivery is preferred.
- Knowledge of speech-language therapy principles and practices, including professional regulations and adherence to regulatory bodies.
- Knowledge of the Pyramid of Intervention and its application to broad-based, small group, and individual supports.
- Knowledge of the selection and design of augmentative and alternative communication systems.
- General knowledge of the Division’s operations and busines,s and general understanding of the Division’s mission and vision in a faith-based environment.
- Knowledge of records management principles, the Protection of Privacy Act (POPA), and the Access to Information Act (ATIA).
- Knowledge of workplace safety and awareness of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
- Knowledge and alignment with the Division's administrative procedures.
Skills:
- Strong assessment and problem-solving skills to identify and address developmental and educational delays.
- Proficiency in conveying highly technical/medical information to parents/guardians and professional staff using plain language without bias or judgment.
- Strong leadership abilities in guiding and motivating teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including oral presentations.
- Strong decision-making capabilities and effective conflict resolution skills.
