Reporting to the District Principal of Learning Services, the Social-Emotional Behaviour Strategist (SEBS), works under the day-to-day direction and supervision of the Coordinator. The SEBS is a valuable member of the Learning Services team and provides a trauma-informed approach in support of K-12 students who are exhibiting substantial emotional, and interpersonal difficulties with extreme behavioural challenges and complex needs. The position requires an understanding of indigenous families and the profound effects of trauma, colonization, assimilation, residential schools, child welfare intervention, racism, violence,and social inequality. This itinerant position
works with students' care teams (teachers, education assistants, child & youth care workers, outside agencies, and school administrators) to create student-specific intervention plans and supports school personnel and families in
their understanding of trauma and offers strategies for different environments.
Qualifications Completion of a minimum of two years of post-secondary education which may include a certificate from a recognized EA program and coursework in trauma-informed practice, mental health first aid, child and youth care, social work, and/or specifically relevant training.
A minimum of five years of recent, related experience, including the application of trauma-informed practice,
working with the Indigenous population and their families, school-based teams, and community stakeholders. Demonstrated and thorough understanding of the historical context of the Indigenous population, and the effects of trauma on Indigenous communities; and the strenghts-based perspective gained through education, professional observation and practice.
Ability to calmly support students during crisis situations in a culturally appropriate way; modelling &
implementing student-centered de-escalation strategies that do not re-traumatize while also promoting coping skills and resilience, following safety plans and/or positive behaviour support plans.
Proven ability to implement and model trauma-informed, evidence-based behaviour strategies to support behaviour change and apply them flexibly to match the particular student context while ensuring the student has physical and emotional safety in their environments.
Ability to work independently and cooperatively while following the direction and guidance of the Coordinator
or other members of the District Learning Services team.
Demonstrated ability to exercise exceptional tact, discretion, and judgement.
Strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. Ability to work collaboratively with school and community-based members of a student's team.
Job Description Ability to reliably take various types of data on student performance and behaviour.
Ability to use computer programs (e.g., Word, Excel, Google Tablets) or tablet applications for collecting, summarizing and sharing information.
Current CPI Non-violent Crisis Intervention Certificate is required along with ongoing willingness and ability to maintain currency.
Ability to adapt to regularly changing work environments, work schedules, and locations, including access to a vehicle and holding a valid BC driver's license.
Physically capable of performing the duties of the position.
