Position Title: Program Assistant – Children and Youth Job Type: Term (September 1, 2026 – June 30, 2027), 15–17.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday, 2:30–6:00 p.m., 2:45–6:15 p.m., or 3:00–6:00 p.m.) Direction: Family & Community Services Location: In person at various locations Reporting to: Manager of Children and Youth Services Compensation: $21.43 / H Deadline to apply: July 10 , 2026, by 5:00am
About us We are Somerset West Community Health Centre (SWCHC), a non-profit, community-governed organization that serves over 18,000 clients annually. Established in 1978, SWCHC provides a wide range of health care services such as primary health care, health promotion, community development, mental health, and harm reduction. We are deeply connected to the communities we serve and committed to removing barriers to accessing services for people who experience vulnerabilities because of their age, income, ability, sexual orientation or gender identity, and language or culture. What You’ll Do The Program Assistant – Children and Youth will facilitate community based child and youth programs. Participate in the implementation and assist in monitoring and evaluation of age and culturally appropriate programs to help meet the needs of children, youth and their families using a capacity building and health promotion framework.

Life and Work Experience Experience working directly with child and youth Experience and flexibility working in diverse community-based programs with families facing multiple health risks and barriers
Your Education Path Post secondary education in a related field Required Language Fluency in English required. Working knowledge of French an asset.
Specific requirements Criminal Reference check for working with vulnerable populations Current CPR level C, First Aid Food Handlers and High Five Certification, an asset
What You Bring to the Table Adequate energy level and ability to meet the physical demands of the job Strong knowledge of child development and behaviour guidance techniques Effective at communicating and problem solving
Your Day-to-Day at a Glance As our Program Assistant – Children and Youth your responsibilities are:
Direct service with children 6-12 years at an After School Program Assists to plan programs that enhance cognitive, physical, social, and emotional development Implements and assists to monitor, and evaluate community based programs Assists to register and maintain files and daily attendance for each child registered and participating in community based program Provide updates and contacts parents when necessary Monitor and maintain/purchase adequate supplies and equipment for programming Create linkages with available community resources i.e. local schools, recreation centres Ensure all program safety measures are being met Works closely with volunteers and student placements

Priority is given to individuals with unique needs, including single parent families, those who are financially insecure, new Canadians, and persons coping with various disabilities. SWCHC welcomes and supports individuals of all gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, and ethnicities.
SWCHC serves a large multicultural area in Ottawa's centre west, including Dalhousie, Hintonburg, Mechanicsville, and West Wellington, with a population of approximately 40,000 persons. Much of the community's population is made up of new immigrants to Canada, who face many struggles which for many include a lack of English language skills.
