Term:12 (twelve) weeks starting ASAP. End date to be determined based on starting date.
Hours: 20 hours per week (flexible times between Monday-Friday 8:30-4:30pm)
Program: ASK Works and United Way BC Work Experience Opportunities Grant
Location: Penticton
Program Requirement: Eligible if receiving or qualified for*:
§ BC Employment Assistance (BCEA)
§ Disability Assistance, Persons with Disabilities (PWD) or Persons with Persistent Multiple Barriers (PPMB)
§ Hardship Assistance
§ Indigenous assistance through Treaty First Nations or First Nation Administering Authorities
§ Indigenous people receiving equivalent federal assistance, can participate in work experience projects that occur only on Indigenous reserves or Treaty Lands
- Participants are required to demonstrate their eligibility (i.e. proof of deposit, letter, statement, etc.) as we recognize that each participant's circumstances are unique.

Position Summary:
Work alongside the Head Cook of the Housing Facility with helping the marginalized community at an excellent level while maintaining and abiding by all standards, policies and/or procedures set forth by the ASK Wellness Society and any applicable government agencies. In partnership with the Head Cook manage daily kitchen activities, aiding with menu preparation, ensuring food quality and freshness, and monitoring ordering and stocking. Service delivery is based on a client centered, non-judgmental perspective.
Typical Duties Include:
- Wash utensils, dishes and all kitchen equipment as required.
- Assist with meal preparation, service.
- Receiving, storing and organizing food deliveries following the required protocols and Food Safety standards.
- Ensures a first-in, first-out food rotation system and verifies that all food products are properly dated and organized for quality assurance.
- Keep cooking stations stocked, especially before and during prime operation hours.
- Verify food storage units all meet standards and are consistently well-managed.
- Assist Head Chef with menu creation.
- Evaluate food products to ensure that quality standards are consistently attained.
- Regularly monitor and inspect kitchen equipment, report any problems or inconsistencies to the Head Chef and make recommendations for repair or procurement.
- Ensure high standards of hygiene, cleanliness and safety are always maintained throughout all kitchen areas.
- Be prepared to work calmly and together with your team, paramedics, and police in crisis situations.
- When requested, be a member of the Society’s Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) team.
- Ensure compliance with all Society policies and procedures.
- Other duties which may or may not be outlined within this job description.
Qualifications and Requirements:
(Note: This is a supported work experience position. Training and mentorship will be provided.)
- This position is ideal for those seeking to gain work experience.
- Formal culinary training is considered an asset.
- Food Safe certificate an asset.
- Knowledge of food hygiene and safe kitchen practices including the use of commercial equipment and tools.
- Knowledge of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) is an asset.
- Ability to work within a team-based environment.
- Occupational First Aid Level 1 and WHMIS Certification required.
- Understands and maintains clientele/peer/worker boundaries.
- Respectful workplace and occupational health and safety training provided.
- Must pass an acceptable criminal record check.
- As Program Participants are allowed to have pets, it is noted that this is a pet-friendly environment.
- Willingness to learn, positive attitude, and a commitment to the values of ASK Wellness Society.
