Key Responsibilities The Senior Naval Architect is responsible for professionally and efficiently executing work in support of client taskings for small to large platforms.
Responsibilities And Tasks Include
- Providing Naval Architecture advice and support to external and internal customers.
- Managing your own technical work and evaluate its effectiveness to improve best practice.
- Working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Complying with relevant business and ethics codes of conduct.
- Undertaking engineering and non-engineering activities in a way that contributes to best practice.
- Acting as Technical Lead on specified projects.
- Acting as Technical Assurer on specified projects.
- Acting as Project Manager (PM) on specified projects.
- Working within the BMT Quality Management System (QMS) processes and procedures.
- Maintaining your technical competency in your area(s) of specialization.
- Building a positive team culture through input, feedback and participation in team building and wellness activities.
Role Specific:

Ability to conduct Naval Architectural calculations on small simple platforms (tug, barge, ferry) to large complex ships (surface combatants, submarines, cargo and passenger vessels) in one or more areas including:
-
Hydrostatics;
-
Hydrodynamics;
-
Structural strength;
-
Seakeeping and motions; and
-
Resistance and Propulsion.

Conduct Trim and Incline (T&I) experiments and generate associated calculations and documentation.

Work with Shipyards, Dockyards, Owners, Class and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) to conduct ship surveys for design and engineering changes, mid-life upgrades and vessel condition documentation.

Knowledge of domain specific standards including International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulations, Class Society rules, Transport Canada Regulations and Canadian Forces Technical Orders.

Maintain a program of Continuing Professional Development to sustain your technical knowledge.

Work with Capability Manager to identify the levels of suitably qualified and experienced personnel (SQEP) required to fulfil current and projected demand.

Work with Capability Manager to identify training or other developmental opportunities to develop SQEP within BMT.
-
Work with Capability Manager to identify resources for project work, training and development opportunities.
-
Mentor BMT staff who are developing skills, qualifications and experience in their domain.
-
Arbitrate on disputes concerning technical content within their domain.

Stamp and Seal Professional Engineering deliverables in accordance with the BMT Professional Practice Management Plan (PPMP).
Essential Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Degree in Marine Engineering or Naval Architecture;
- Minimum 10 years of experience in Naval Architecture;
- Existing registration or ability to obtain registration with Professional Engineering governance body in Province of work; and,
- Eligible for a Canadian security clearance.
Desirable:
- Detailed knowledge and experience in the following areas:
- Ship or submarine hydrostatics including stability, weight control and margins; and
- Ship or submarine inclining experiments (submerged and surfaced);
- Experience in the in-service support of naval systems and/or engineering design;
- Experience in the development and use of technical studies and drawings;
- An understanding of specifications for government and commercial vessels;
- Experience in systems integration, ship construction and/or repair;
- Submarine specific knowledge is considered an asset.
