Position Summary

10(B) Criminal Law Center is seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented, and motivated Law Clerk to join our growing criminal defence practice. The successful candidate will play an integral role in supporting counsel throughout all stages of criminal proceedings, ensuring files are managed efficiently while providing exceptional service to clients. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast-paced legal environment, possesses strong organizational skills, and is committed to delivering high-quality legal support.

Key Responsibilities

File Management

Open, organize, and maintain electronic and physical client files. Prepare and manage court briefs, disclosure, correspondence, and legal documents. Monitor limitation periods, filing deadlines, and court appearances. Maintain accurate file notes and document management systems.

Legal Drafting

Draft correspondence to Crown counsel, courts, police agencies, and clients. Prepare routine court forms and legal documents. Assist with drafting affidavits, notices of motion, factums, applications, and other litigation materials. Review documents for accuracy, formatting, and completeness.

Client Communication

Serve as a professional point of contact for clients. Schedule appointments and client meetings. Obtain client information and supporting documentation. Keep clients informed regarding procedural updates and next steps.

Court and Litigation Support

Prepare materials for bail hearings, trials, sentencing hearings, appeals, and applications. Organize disclosure and evidence. Coordinate service and filing of court documents. Assist with trial preparation and exhibit organization.

Administrative Duties

Manage lawyer calendars and court schedules. Coordinate meetings, Zoom hearings, and client appointments. Maintain accurate billing records and administrative files. Handle incoming and outgoing correspondence. Assist with general office administration as required.

Qualifications

Required Law Clerk diploma or equivalent legal education. Minimum 2 years of experience in a law office (criminal law experience is an asset). Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational and time-management abilities. High attention to detail. Ability to prioritize multiple deadlines. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel). Experience using document management systems. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a team.

Assets

Experience in criminal defence. Familiarity with Ontario Court procedures. Knowledge of Court Services Online, Case Center, Zoom Court, and related legal technology. Experience with Legal Aid Ontario matters. Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat and PDF document management.
