ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a passionate Educator in Cree Language to join our school team. The Cree Language Teacher is responsible for the development and instruction of the Cree language program in Fort McKay. This position will include classroom instruction and the development of Cree language materials and resources. The incumbent will utilize a team-centered approach and work with school staff, parents, students and community members. This is a full-time contract position for the 2026-2027 school year, reporting directly to the Principal of Elsie Fabian School.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Coordinate language and culture programing and curriculum development within Fort McKay School and teach Cree language and culture in accordance with the school schedule

Develop a Cree Language Program that promotes best practices in learning, assessment and instruction
-
Work with staff to promote Cree language integration in all classes and in all subjects
-
Bring Cree knowledge base of cultural competency in the design and development of resources
-
Assist in developing and conveying a positive image of Cree Language and culture to the school and community
-
Provide student assessment and reports in accordance with the school calendar
-
Work both autonomously and in teams on diverse language projects
-
In collaboration with the Language and Culture Teachers, assist with cultural events
-
Continuously provide inquiry and reflect on teaching best practices
-
Review of current literature on best practices in Cree Language and Culture
-
Attend in-services and workshops as approved by the Director of Education
-
Other duties shall be assigned as required
KEY REQUIREMENTS
-
Bachelor’s Degree in Education
-
Valid Alberta Teaching Certificate
-
Extensive Knowledge of Cree Language instruction
-
Fluency in Cree language both written and oral
-
Respect and understanding for Fort McKay traditions, values, and culture
-
Enthusiasm, flexibility, dedication and commitment to community language and culture revitalization
-
Previous teaching experience and strong classroom management skills
-
Extensive knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
-
Experience working in a First Nations community including knowledge of First Nations culture, traditions and values is a definite asset
-
Clean Criminal Record Check with vulnerable sector required
-
Valid class 5 Driver’s License & Clean Driver’s Abstract required

The Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN) is composed of over 800 band members, including those of Cree and Dene heritage, with approximately 400 members residing in the hamlet of Fort McKay — a community located approximately 65 km north of Fort McMurray. Fort McKay offers the best of both worlds: remote northern life for the nature lover and proximity to a large city of about 70,000 people with all the amenities you need.

The Elsie Fabian School is a K-9 school that opened its doors September of 2022 and we are looking for dynamic and passionate Educators who love Northern Living to join the team! The school incorporates both the Dene and Cree Language, culture, and Land-Based Education where students learn about their rich local history. Fort McKay is looking for talented educators who practice and believe that the well-being of the child is at the center of everything; this is the shared practice and belief of the Fort McKay elders, parents and community members.

About Fort McKay First Nation
Fort McKay First Nation (FMFN), located along the banks of the Athabasca River in the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo north of Fort McMurray. There are approximately 800 Dene, Cree and Métis community members living in Fort McKay. The FMFN shares a border with the Fort McKay Métis Community and together we call Fort McKay home.
The FMFN believes the practice and preservation of our traditional ways of life can occur simultaneously alongside continuous and responsible oil sands development. This philosophy has allowed the FMFN to enhance our community's social and economic conditions through effective partnerships with industry and government.
