Are you a highly-skilled communications professional with a passion for creating impactful and engaging content?

The City of Edmonton is looking for a Communications Advisor to join the LRT Expansion and Renewal team. This role is a fantastic opportunity for someone who thrives in a fast-paced environment and enjoys the challenge of leading multiple projects with competing deadlines. As a key member of the team, you will be instrumental in drafting and implementing integrated marketing and communications plans, directly supporting a wide range of corporate, department and branch initiatives.

As a Communications Advisor, you will provide direct communications strategy and advice to various City teams that are helping to design and deliver LRT infrastructure on behalf of City Council and Edmontonians. You will work with those teams to identify and define business challenges, craft communications strategies to assist in solving those challenges, and implement communications plans and associated tactics.

The responsibilities of this position range from the development of comprehensive integrated communications plans, to project management, to relationship building. You are required to work closely with colleagues in an integrated fashion on projects across portfolios and will exemplify the City of Edmonton’s cultural commitments.

What will you do?

  • Lead, develop, manage and implement integrated marketing and communications plans and projects for both external and internal audiences
  • Identify emerging issues and provide timely advice, responsive issues management and effective communication strategies
  • Manage media relations and potential issues, including reviewing Council reports, planning and managing media events, developing strategies and consistent messaging, coaching spokespeople
  • Work with clients, designers and suppliers to help create effective communication and advertising products
  • Lead and support marketing and education initiatives, as well as client responses to citizen inquiries
  • Provide communications support to public outreach initiatives, involving residents in the development of projects and initiatives
  • Write news releases, public service announcements, media advisories, brochures, newsletters and other communication materials
  • Edit, develop and update web and 311 content for programs, projects and initiatives
  • Use social media outlets (e.g. Facebook, X, Instagram) to advance business goals and enhance internal and external communication efforts
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

One of the following:

  • A degree in a communications, public relations, or a related field, supplemented by a minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position

OR

  • A diploma in a communications, public relations or related field, supplemented by a minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in a designated public relations, public affairs or public information position

Skills required for success:

  • Superior written and verbal communication and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated experience with traditional media, social media, web-based communications and working with graphic designers
  • Experience with coaching spokespeople
  • Experience supporting effective public outreach activities for project development from concept to construction
  • Experience developing communication plans, with the ability to successfully create, develop, implement and evaluate areas of the plan
  • Proficiency in Gmail and Google Suite
  • Experience working with transportation planning or construction clients is an asset
  • Experience related to project management and communicating with business partners
  • Relationship-building skills, with ability to identify and manage issues through a client consulting approach
