Course Information

A focus on ways in which teachers of linguistically and culturally diverse groups can support the language and literacy development of students for whom English is an additional language. Emphasis on practical strategies useful in diverse mainstream classrooms. (.25 credit)

This course is taught Online (synchronous).

The Faculty of Education invites applications for a Limited Duties Instructor to teach Supporting English Language Learners as part of the Bachelor of Education program. This course equips teacher candidates with strategies for recognizing and addressing the linguistic, academic, and socio-cultural needs of English language learners (ELLs) across school contexts. Candidates will gain insight into inclusive teaching practices, second-language acquisition theories, and the use of assessment and instructional supports for ELLs in diverse classrooms.

• Prepare and deliver course content through synchronous Online instruction.
• Support teacher candidates in understanding principles of second language acquisition, language and literacy development, and inclusive instructional strategies.
• Provide feedback on student learning and facilitate interactive discussions and activities aligned with course objectives.
• Promote a supportive and inclusive Online learning environment that reflects culturally responsive pedagogy.
• Assess student work and submit final grades according to university policies.
• Communicate effectively with the Teacher Education Office and, if applicable, the course coordinator.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for all activities associated with the successful delivery of the course, including but not limited to: developing, preparing, and delivering the course; setting and marking examinations, assessing the academic work of students, and reporting grades.

Candidates must be willing to undertake training as required by the Employer including, but not limited to, training in respect of health and safety, harassment and discrimination, and legislated service standards.

Qualifications

Qualifications (Minimum Required):

• Master’s degree or equivalent qualification in TESOL, English as a Second Language (ESL), Applied Linguistics, OCT Specialist qualification in Teaching English Language Learners, or a related field.

• Knowledge of language development frameworks and differentiated instruction.

• Record of effective teaching performance at the post-secondary or teacher education level.

• Demonstrated experience teaching English language learners in K-12 setting.

• Familiarity with inclusive classroom practices, formative assessment, and language development supports for multilingual learners.

• Familiarity with the Ontario Curriculum and Ministry documents related to supporting English language learning.

Preferred Qualifications / Assets:

• Ph.D. or Ed.D. in TESOL, English as a Second Language (ESL), or Applied Linguistics.
• Ontario College of Teachers (OCT) certification in good standing (current) or held within the last five years.
• Experience mentoring or supporting teacher candidates in courses related to language and literacy or ELL instruction.
• Experience teaching in Online environments using synchronous technologies.
• Demonstrated commitment to anti-oppressive education and culturally responsive pedagogy.
